For many of us, allergies don’t factor into our lives one bit. But for others, it’s something they constantly need to be diligent. Peanut allergies are among the most common — to the point where many schools have outright banned any food with nuts in them.
But even with all the precautions in place, mistakes can still happen. A Reddit user shared a story of how she accidentally got her twin stepdaughters mixed up, and let one have a Snickers bar despite being allergic to peanuts. She decided to ask the AITA community if she was in the wrong to do so, especially since it was an honest mistake .
Using A Throwaway Account, OP Posted Her Story.

OP Married An Older Man With 9-Year-Old Twins.

The twins, whom OP calls Maria and Isabella, are identical, and OP has a hard time telling them apart. OP also states she is autistic, which makes it difficult for her to tell them apart by mannerisms, so they wear different colored wristbands for OP’s sake.
OP is currently pregnant and has cravings for Snickers bars. Since Maria is severely allergic to nuts, OP eats them in specific spots, such as her bedroom. The twins both know Maria can’t eat nut products. But one day, they decided to play a prank on OP and switched wristbands to pretend that Isabella was Maria and vice versa. Maria came into OP’s room while she was eating mini Snickers. Thinking it was Isabella, OP didn’t think twice when the twin ate the chocolate. She only realized it was Maria when the child began having a reaction.
OP did the right thing by getting Maria’s EpiPen and taking her to the hospital. She ended up being fine, but the twins’ mom and her family are incredibly upset with OP. They believe OP should never be alone with the twins, though her husband has defended her.
Commenters Believed OP Was Not In The Wrong.

Though Maria had a serious allergic reaction, it wasn’t OP’s fault. Commenters argued that the kids are old enough to know Maria can’t have nuts.
OP Also Didn’t Offer Chocolate To Either Kid.

Maria ate the Snickers bar of her own volition, knowing full well they had nuts in them. OP didn’t pressure her or even offer any to her.
The Kids’ Mom Has A Right To Be Upset, But May Have Overreacted.

Some believe that the mom might be using the event as an excuse to dislike OP. Others, meanwhile, hope this could be used as a teaching moment for the kids.
