People watch as a new proposal could see that President Donald Trump may serve a third term until 2032. Trump’s inauguration took place on Monday, January 20, when he became the 47th President of the United States.
He is the second president to be elected in a non-consecutive term after his first ended in 2021, with the first being the 22nd and 24th President of the United States, Grover Cleveland.
Tennessee congressman Andy Ogles wants to see a change
After the inauguration, Ogles filed a Joint Resolution, that sought changing the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.
The 22nd Amendment states that a president can only serve two terms. If the change is successful, they will be able to serve three. Ogles believes that Trump needs more than a term to be able to achieve his goals.
The 22nd Amendment of the constitution
It reads as follows: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.”
The history behind the 22nd Amendment
The 22nd Amendment was ratified in 1951 since Franklin Delano Roosevelt won four consecutive terms by wide margins, which was unfair. The aim of this amendment is to allow a president to serve up to three four-year stints in the White House
Ogles released a statement in support of the change
“President Trump’s decisive leadership stands in stark contrast to the chaos, suffering, and economic decline Americans have endured over the past four years,” he wrote in his statement.
“He has proven himself to be the only figure in modern history capable of reversing our nation’s decay and restoring America to greatness, and he must be given the time necessary to accomplish that goal,” he continued.
The end justifies the means
“To that end, I am proposing an amendment to the Constitution to revise the limitations imposed by the 22nd Amendment on presidential terms. This amendment would allow President Trump to serve three terms, ensuring that we can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs,” Ogles explained.
Trump had no time to waste
Since he was sworn into the presidency on Monday, he got the momentum going, making big changes in the US. He already signed off a number of executive orders and memorandums only within 24 hours of his presidency.
The executive orders and memorandums he signed off
First off, he started with those imprisoned during the Capitol Riots in January 2021, issuing orders to release and pardon 1,500 people convicted, or facing conviction, for their roles in the riots.
Additionally, he ruled that there are now only two genders in the US – male and female.
He also reversed the TikTok ban
Trump temporarily reversed the TikTok ban that was in action before he was sworn in. The White House website states:
“To fulfill those responsibilities, I intend to consult with my advisors, including the heads of relevant departments and agencies on the national security concerns posed by TikTok, and to pursue a resolution that protects national security while saving a platform used by 170 million Americans.”
The reasons behind the issued orders
Trump pulled the male and female move in order to “defend women from gender ideology extremism and restoring biological truth.”
Additionally, concerning the TikTok ban reversal, it may be a temporary fix as they continued on the Whitehouse website, stating: “My Administration must also review sensitive intelligence related to those concerns and evaluate the sufficiency of mitigation measures TikTok has taken to date.”
Ogles wants to make the amendment exclusive to Trump
If they succeed in changing the 22nd Amendment, it will be done so Trump can be the only one eligible to elect himself for a third term, and not Former President Barack Obama, who served two consecutive terms.
