The frantic search began with no answers in sight
Mary Lyon called 9-1-1 after a few hours, which sparked a huge investigation in the Washington, DC area. Planes, dogs, and volunteers were involved in the search, but sadly, the officials couldn’t find any answers for the sisters’ family and friends.
The case went cold for over four decades
The case stayed unsolved for 42 years — until 2017, when Lloyd Lee Welch Jr. was finally convicted for kidnapping and killing Katherine and Sheila.
A long-forgotten file provided a vital clue
Chris Homrock, the deputy sergeant from the Montgomery County Police, was going through some files when he found a 1975 document he’d never seen before. The suspicious document was about an 18-year-old named Welch, and the picture in it looked a lot like a drawing of someone who was said to have leered at the sisters back in 1975.
The suspect had a dark and violent history
Upon further investigation, Homrock discovered that Welch was already in prison for molesting a 10-year-old girl in 1998. He was serving a 33-year sentence for a serious criminal record, including domestic violence, rape, and assault with a knife.
Welch confessed during a confrontation with police
Homrock went to visit Welch, and the prisoner immediately said, “I know why you’re here. You’re here about those two missing kids.”
The court handed Welch a life sentence
On September 12, 2017, Welch admitted to the abduction and murder of Katherine and Sheila, pleading guilty to two charges of first-degree murder. The court gave him two concurrent 48-year sentences. He will spend the rest of his life in prison. Once he finishes his original term in Delaware in 2026, he’ll be transferred to a Virginia facility to complete the rest.
The girls’ remains have never been found
