While a person can only be president for two terms in the US, new research polls have shown the shocking amount of Americans who would want Trump to run for a third term as he keeps mentioning his desire to do so.
Trump has been teasing the idea
As it stands, the law in America only allows a person to spend two terms in office, but the 47th returning President of the United States, Donald Trump, has been teasing the idea of becoming president for a third time since January.
Andy Ogles has a similar view to Trump
While America’s 22nd Amendment prohibits that a person run for more than two terms in office, US Representative Andy Ogles suggests that this be changed.
Ogles felt the law should only prohibit consecutive terms instead of any two terms.
He shared his suggestion
Ogles has instead suggested that the law reads, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”
According to him, the gap should allow Trump to run again
Essentially this means that because there’s a gap between Trump’s first and second terms as president, he should be able to run for a second consecutive term.
Initially, it was unclear whether Americans want this to happen, but things have changed since then.
Trump’s approval ratings are in
As Trump’s new approval ratings were published, it appears a large number of Americans wouldn’t mind him staying in office until 2032.
As Trump’s 100th day in office comes tomorrow on Wednesday April 30, according to Pew Research Center, 40% of poll participants approve of his performance so far.
This is down by seven percent
This number is down by seven percent from his approval rates in February. 59% of people also disapprove of his moves regarding tariff hikes that have caused chaos in the global stock market and raised prices on Americans.
Reuters also conducted a poll
Another poll done by Reuters and Ipsos revealed three-quarters of respondents don’t want Trump to run for a third term, leaving a quarter of the sample approving of it.
Reuters said, “Three-quarters of respondents said Trump should not run for a third term in office — a path Trump has said he would like to pursue, though the U.S. Constitution bars him from doing so.”
Over half of Republican respondents don’t want him to rerun
The outlet added, “A majority of Republican respondents — 53% — said Trump should not seek a third term.”
While the majority of respondents in these polls appear to disapprove of Trump’s recent performance in office, the remaining number who do is perhaps still a shocking one as the POTUS keeps pushing for a third term.
