Now, there’s nothing wrong with taking on a vegetarian diet or even going vegan. You’ve gotta do what’s right for you, and you don’t even owe it to anybody to explain your reasoning behind it. And there’s nothing wrong with tucking into a good, greasy burger once in a while, either, for that matter.
But it turns out some folks out there might have been lying to themselves just a bit.
Haven’t we all felt the siren song of street meat after stumbling out of the bar late at night?

And doesn’t there always seem to be a hot dog cart or a souvlaki stand nearby waiting to take advantage of that craving? Yeah, they know what’s up. Of course, there aren’t a lot of great vegetarian options at that point, but for more than a third of vegetarians out there, that’s not a problem. They’ll just have meat anyway.
That’s right, 37% of vegetarians have confessed to indulging in a meaty treat after tying one on.
That’s according to a survey out of Britain, conducted by VoucherCodesPro. The website asked a number of questions of 1,789 British vegetarians, and it came up with some startling revelations.
Apart from asking whether they ever eat meat when drunk, the survey also asked vegetarians how often they did so.
Of those 37% of admitted situational omnivores, a full 34% fessed up that they heartily gobbled up meat every single time they drank. Another 26% said they did so “fairly often,” 22% said “rarely,” and 18% said “occasionally,” although the distinction between “rarely” and “occasionally” is anybody’s guess.
So what meats are most popular with momentarily lapsed vegetarians?
At the top of the list, 39% prefer kebab meat, that wonderful spiced mystery blend shaved off a fleshy tower in a restaurant on wheels. Next up are beef burgers at 34%, bacon at 27%, fried chicken at 19%, and pork sausages at 14%. Kinda surprised bacon isn’t higher because, come on, it’s bacon.
However, when vegetarians do go for a beefy snack, they do so in a responsible, frugal manner.
On average, the survey respondents would only spend £4.80, or about $6 U.S. on their sneaky treat — maybe they’ve already spent the rest on booze, maybe they’re watching their figures, who knows, but it’s still pretty reasonable.
Here’s the weird thing: the vast majority of those who indulged their more carnivorous sides kept it a secret afterwards.
Yeah, 69% of them didn’t want their friends and family to know they’d decided to power down a bacon cheeseburger while sauced and hid it from them. So, got loaded, ate meant, and felt shame afterwards, which is pretty sad when you think about it.
Maybe if they just admitted to themselves that they like meat and didn’t feel the need to live up to the vegetarian label they’d be happier!
Even the man behind the survey was surprised at the results.
George Charles, the founder of VoucherCodesPro, told The Morning Advertiser that “I know a few vegetarians who sometimes crave meat, but it seems that a few are giving into their cravings when drunk! I think it’s important for friends of these vegetarians to support them when drunk and urge them not to eat meat as I’m sure they regret it the next day!”
