A man in his 50s got seriously injured after a kangaroo attacked him outside his home in Central Queensland, Australia.
He had just stepped outside to run a quick errand when he spotted two kangaroos. While one fled, the other — a massive 100kg kangaroo — got aggressive.
The man suffered deep cuts on his chest, hip, and arm, and was rushed to the hospital. Thankfully, he’s now stable, but it was a close call.
He was going to run an errand
“He came out his front door to get into his vehicle and to drive up to the shops and pick up his mail, and there were two roos outside his door.”
It was just a regular day for him — he stepped out to grab his mail and run a quick errand, not expecting to encounter anything out of the ordinary.
The first kangaroo fled immediately
“One of them took off, but the big buck turned and attacked him – it was that quick and that simple.”
The first kangaroo immediately took off, but the second one, the bigger of the two, turned right around and attacked. It all happened incredibly fast.
The kangaroo was large and hostile
“The big buck turned and attacked him – it was that quick and that simple.”
This wasn’t just any kangaroo. It was about 100kg — and had the strength to cause serious damage.
The man suffered serious injuries
“By the time I got down there, they had him on a stretcher. He was pretty badly cut up and bleeding quite profusely with blood all over the ground where he was lying.”
When help arrived, the man was in rough shape. There was a lot of blood, and he had deep cuts all over. It was clear how serious the situation was.
He was quickly taken to the hospital
“He was rushed to Emerald Hospital before being airlifted to Rockhampton Hospital soon after.”
After the initial treatment, the man was airlifted to a larger hospital for more advanced care.
His condition was stable the next day
A spokeswoman for the Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service said the man was in a stable condition on Thursday.
By the next day, his condition had improved, and he was stable, which was a relief.
The attack was quick
The attack happened so fast. As soon as the first roo ran off, the other just turned and viciously attacked without warning. It was all over in seconds.
The roo was likely an Eastern Grey
“I got a message from Fire Control in Rockhampton to assist Queensland Ambulance Service… the angry roo was likely an Eastern Grey Kangaroo.”
Eastern Grey roos are known to be large and strong — definitely not something you want to tangle with.
Action must be taken to prevent more attacks
“He also told tourists to stop feeding kangaroos as that can lead to more attacks in the future.”
Some of the local authorities are urging the government to step in, especially to stop people from feeding kangaroos. Apparently, it can lead to more aggressive behavior and attacks like this one.
Feeding kangaroos can be dangerous
“These roos have been around here for years and we’ve never had a problem before, but unfortunately, these two big bucks have taken it in their heads to attack people.”
Now that these two large ones have started attacking, it’s raising concerns for future encounters. Something needs to change, before another encounter turns into a disaster.
