Christopher Ciccone, the younger brother of pop icon Madonna, has passed away at the age of 63 after a long battle with cancer. His death on October 4 comes just 10 days after their stepmother Joan Ciccone’s passing, and only months after their older brother, Anthony, died in 2023.
The series of losses has left fans expressing their condolences for the family.
Christopher, an integral part of Madonna’s early career, was much more than her brother.

He was a dancer, choreographer, and creative consultant who worked closely with Madonna during her rise to fame. Outside of his collaboration with Madonna, he was an accomplished interior designer, footwear designer, and memoirist, turning to painting as his ultimate passion.
In a statement, the Ciccone family confirmed Christopher’s passing.

Madonna took to Instagram to express her grief in a moving tribute to her brother.

“My brother Christopher is gone. He was the closest human to me for so long,” she wrote, reflecting on their unique bond.
She described how they faced societal challenges together growing up and credited their mutual love of dance as something that helped them survive the hardships of their childhood.
She continued:

“We took each other’s hands and danced through the madness of our childhood … and then later through the streets of New York City,” she continued.
Madonna and Christopher both found solace in dance, especially as they navigated the artistic and cultural hub that was New York during the 1980s. “We danced through the madness of the AIDS epidemic,” she added, noting the emotional and physical losses they endured during that time.
Although the siblings had been estranged in recent years, Madonna revealed that they reconciled during Christopher’s illness.

“When my brother got sick, we found our way back to each other,” she shared.
She spoke of how, during his final days, they held hands once again and danced, just as they had done throughout their lives. “I did my best to keep him alive as long as possible… I’m glad he’s not suffering anymore.”
Christopher is survived by his husband, Ray Thacker, whom he married in 2016.

His death came as the family was still grieving the loss of their stepmother, Joan Gustafson Ciccone, who passed away on September 24 after a battle with cancer.
Joan had married Madonna’s father, Silvio Ciccone, in 1966, becoming the stepmother to his six children following the death of their biological mother.
Joan’s death followed the passing of Madonna’s older brother, Anthony, earlier this year on February 24.

Anthony, 66, had struggled with respiratory issues and throat cancer, which led to his death in a Michigan nursing facility. Madonna had reportedly been helping cover the cost of his care.
The string of recent deaths in Madonna’s family has left fans heartbroken.

On social media, many expressed their sympathy for the pop star. “Devastated for you and your family,” one fan commented. Others shared similar sentiments, with another adding, “Sending you and your family so much love during this difficult time.”
As Madonna’s family navigates these back-to-back losses, her fans are showing overwhelming support.

While the Ciccone family continues to mourn, one thing is certain: Christopher’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
