New York State Police said on Tuesday, May 6, that a New York town official shot a DoorDash driver who was lost and trying to ask for directions.
He was attempting to make a delivery
According to the New York State Police, the 24-year-old DoorDash driver was attempting to deliver food on Friday night before he got lost in the town of Chester, which is about 50 miles north of Manhattan.
The police shared exactly what happened
Sharing the details of the incident, the police said the driver “approached several homes asking for directions before arriving at the residence of John Reilly III,” the man who then allegedly shot him.
Reilly told the driver to leave

Police said that 48-year-old Reilly told the driver “to get off his property,” and then allegedly fired shots at him while he was trying to leave in his car.
Officials shared that the victim was shot once in the back and had to be hospitalized with serious injuries. As per ABC News, he is currently in stable condition.
DoorDash addressed the incident
A DoorDash spokesperson said that the company was “devastated by this senseless act of violence” and was wishing the driver “a full and speedy recovery.”
“No one should ever fear for their safety just for trying to make deliveries in their neighborhood,” the spokesperson said, adding, “We’ll continue to work closely with law enforcement as they investigate this tragic incident.”
The shooter was charged
Reilly, the man who allegedly shot the driver, is a federally licensed firearms dealer. He was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm.
He was arraigned at the Orange County Centralized Arraignment Part, with his preliminary hearing set to take place today, Friday, May 9.
The town supervisor also addressed the situation
Chester Town Supervisor Brandon Holdridge also addressed the incident in a statement two days after the incident, saying that the board was “deeply troubled by what has been reported so far.”
He added, “We hope the person who was injured in the incident makes a full and healthy recovery.”
