If there were any particularly big The Last Song fans hoping for a last minute reconciliation between Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, it looks like those hopes are dashed.
Liam and Miley got married this past December.
It was a low-key event that the public only learned about through Instagram stories. Despite being together for almost a decade, the marriage only lasted eight months.
The couple announced their separation earlier this month.
In a statement, they said, “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers.”
While Miley hasn’t officially commented on the separation, Liam made an Instagram post confirming the news.
He wrote, “Hi all. Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward.”
To some people, the wording was very specific.
The use of the word “separation” had some fans hoping for a reconciliation somewhere down the line for the longtime couple.
They’ve done the on/off thing before.
Miley and Liam have had a rocky history. They initially started dating all the way back in 2009, during the filming of the movie The Last Song. They got engaged in 2012.
In 2013, they called off their first engagement.
Miley was rumored to be seeing model Stella Maxwell during their split, and came out with the heart-wrenching breakup anthem ‘Wrecking Ball.’
When they reunited in 2016, fans were hoping it was for good this time.
The couple was constantly sharing loved up photos on their social media pages, usually accompanied by a sweet and sappy message. Liam often called Miley his ‘angel.’
TMZ has learned that Liam has officially filed for divorce from Miley.
Their sources say that Liam filed in LA, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split. TMZ reports that there was prenup in place, so the split should be fairly simple.
This comes on the heels of Miley being photographed making out with ‘The Hills’ star Kaitlynn Carter.
Miley also just released a song “Slide Away” that seems to be about her split from Liam, singing that she doesn’t want “the whiskey and pills,” alluding to rumors that Liam’s drug and alcohol use contributed to the split, which sources from Liam’s team have strongly denied.
Some fans felt that this split was foreshadowed by a recent interview Miley gave.
In an interview with Elle Miley said, “My relationship is unique. And I don’t know that I would ever publicly allow people in there because it’s so complex, and modern, and new that I don’t think we’re in a place where people would get it. I mean, do people really think that I’m at home in a [expletive] apron cooking dinner?”
“I’m in a hetero relationship, but I still am very sexually attracted to women.”
“People become vegetarian for health reasons, but bacon is still [expletive] good, and I know that. I made a partner decision. This is the person I feel has my back the most. I definitely don’t fit into a stereotypical wife role. I don’t even like that word,” she said.
Some fans felt that her reluctance to use the word “wife” was a sign that their marriage was not going to last.
The rumor mill picked up speed as both Liam and Miley were spotted without their wedding rings.
Liam was photographed without his while surfing with his brother Chris, while Miley shared these FOMO-inducing vacation shots on her Instagram not wearing hers.
The split has been filled with drama.
When the photographs were released of Miley making out with Kaitlynn Carter, all eyes were turned to Carter’s own famous ex, The Hills star (and half-brother to the Kardashian family) Brody Jenner.
Brody had made a light-hearted joke on his Instagram referencing the scandal.
It looked like Miley didn’t think it was so funny, though, because she commented back saying “Go take a nap in your truck and cool off #HotGirlSummer.”
There were also rumors that Liam had given a particularly heartbreaking response to a reporter who had asked him about the split.
One news outlet claimed Liam had told them that “You don’t know what it’s like,” when asked about the separation, and that he had added, “I don’t want to talk about it.”
Liam took to his own Instagram to deny this claim, saying that all quotes attributed to him were fale.
