You’d think that, in this day and age, people would be less bigoted toward others. And yet, there are people out there who think it’s okay to mock and make fun of others for their skin color, background, or sexuality, among other things.
A woman on Reddit who goes by myJobSucksA** has to deal with bigoted coworkers on the daily, as she works somewhere that doesn’t have a good HR department. When she gets targeted for being an out lesbian, she just dishes back whatever she gets. But after mocking one homophobic coworker, she’s wondering if she took things a little too far. Naturally, she went to AITA for answers .

The User Works In A Male-Dominated Trade.

As a lesbian in a male-dominated field, OP is used to having to take nonsense from bigoted men. She writes that there’s no point talking to management about it since they often spew the same kind of rhetoric.
One day, an especially bigoted coworker asks OP point-blank if she’s a lesbian (but uses a slur). OP responds by acting as if she’s actually straight, with a husband and all. She continues to escalate her assertions, making the coworker extremely uncomfortable, before ending things off with a “your mom” joke. It takes a while before the coworker realizes she’s mocking him.
Now, though, OP feels kind of icky about using a misogynistic joke to clap back at her bigoted coworker. She wondered if she could’ve dished it back in a different way. OP often feels that she must speak in a crude manner in front of her coworkers to keep from being pushed around.
But For The Most Part, Commenters Were On OP’s Side.

Most users applauded the way OP took her coworker down. He could dish it but clearly couldn’t take it in turn. Some people out there need to learn not to insult others, especially if they don’t also want to be insulted.
OP Responded As Well As She Could, Given Her Environment.

Unfortunately, OP’s job environment doesn’t seem super welcoming. She merely did what she had to in order to keep herself from being needlessly mocked. No one in the comments blamed OP for her response, even if she did use a misogynistic joke to do so.
It’s Pretty Clear OP Isn’t Misogynistic.

Considering how much she worried about it, it’s clear OP doesn’t hate women. While using a “your mom” joke nowadays is pretty passé, OP did what she had to do to stand up for herself.
