Kristen Bell was keeping it real with her children as she was through the parenthood journey. The star mom recently opened up about discussing sensitive topics with her kids, and this included sex, drugs, and their dad’s, Dax Shepard , addiction.
Bell On Communicating With Her kids
The Bad Mom actress was featured as one of the stars to grace the Real Simple magazine cover, and she had a wholesome detail to share about her motherhood. She explained the importance of open communication with her preteen daughters, Lincoln and Delta, and this has to do with discussing what is considered “taboo.”

Bell, 42, revealed that she “hated the word taboo”, that she thought it should be eradicated from the dictionary. The actress made this known as she shared that, usually, that topic should be off-limits to discuss with one’s children. The star relayed that she knew it was shocking, but she softened discussed drugs with her kids, and the fact that their father, Dax Shepard, was dealing with addiction. The Veronica Mars actress included that they discussed sex, as well.
She continued that there are some hard topics that did not need to be if one was willing to show “vulnerability.”
On Her Spouse’s Struggle
The TV star recalled when she met her husband. Bell shared that Dax had just started his journey to recovery when they met. She revealed, “If he found a pill, he’d be gone for three days. He’d miss Christmas and do lots of things that are inarguably bad things.” The When In Rome actress described herself as a “goody-goody with a temper,” while her husband was vulnerable and communicative.
She Used To Be Scared Of Opening Up
The Hollywood actress revealed that she used to be scared of sharing her inhibitions. She would later realize that speaking about her fears helped her gain more respect. She noted that it was not just from her husband but from other people.
Bell Praised Her Spouse
Still speaking about her marriage, Bell had nothing but praise for Dax as she explained that he often helped her keep her heart open and moving forward. The star stated that Dax was a challenger who helps her pull through whenever she felt underqualified for an acting role or parenthood.
The Vulnerability Helped Their Marriage
Dax and Bell have been able to sustain their union with the vulnerability and openness between them and they are moving forward by instilling it in their daughters. She shared that making amends was an important thing in her family. The Burlesque actress stated, “I really respect when someone does something wrong or hurtful and they apologize. I’m like, ‘Yeah, right on.’ That’s important.”
Bell On Her Motherhood Challenges
Once speaking with Us Weekly about the tough moment of motherhood, Bell stated that the lack of sleep was an issue. She noted that this deficiency fueled her lack of patience for her girls sometimes. The TV star added that if she had a full night’s rest, she is usually able to curb her impatience.
Communication Came Into Play Again
The star noted that whenever she felt so exhausted, she would let her husband know she needs a break. While speaking, Bell relayed that “really good communication” helped them. She noted that she would often tell her spouse that she needed to be away either to hike or go out with a friend. and that was a way to refuel.
