In case you missed it, Detroit got hit with a massive 54-inch water main break earlier this week, and it’s been a complete mess. Almost 300 residents are still dealing with the fallout.
ABC7’s Darren Cunningham spoke to people in the area, and one resident said their basement had nearly two feet of water.
The mayor, Mike Duggan, has said the city will cover any uninsured damage, but many people are only now realizing just how bad this whole thing really was.
The extreme weather made the situation even worse

As if the water main breaking wasn’t enough, the timing made everything ten times worse. Temperatures dropped to about 2 degrees Fahrenheit overnight, and when you mix that with tons of water flooding the streets?
Yeah, total disaster. Even people working for the city are saying this was way worse than it looks.
A dystopian scene that shocked the internet

The whole thing just looks… unreal. Straight-up dystopian. A TikTok user, @yenisevilla8, posted a video that took off, getting almost 7 million views.
Then, it made its way to Reddit, thanks to u/RoyalChris, and people there couldn’t believe what they were seeing either.
Frozen cars trapped in ice-covered streets

The video, taken from someone’s front porch, shows an entire street where cars are completely frozen solid. As the camera moves, you see even more vehicles stuck under layers of ice.
One car looks like it’s completely underwater, but nope — that’s all ice. A lot of people had put their windshield wipers up, like they usually do before snowstorms, but let’s be real — no one expected their cars to be literally frozen to death.
The whole street turned into a solid block of ice. It’s just crazy to look at.
Eyewitnesses describe the shocking aftermath

People who live there have been sharing their stories about how bad things got. ABC7’s Darren Cunningham talked to one resident who had two feet of water in their basement. Imagine waking up to that.
A firsthand account of the disaster’s impact

“As an employee that works with DTE’s (Detroit Edison, one of the biggest power companies in the state) furnace repair dispatch, I can confirm firsthand it’s worse than it looks….and it looks pretty bad.”
The city’s response and efforts to help residents

The latest update shows that things are finally moving in the right direction. The city has stepped in to help, and progress is being made.
A disaster that left many in disbelief

“I’ve never seen anything like this. JFC.”
It’s been a brutal week for Detroit, but at least things are starting to get cleaned up. Hopefully, this mess won’t leave people struggling for too much longer.
