In a brazen attempt to evade the law, an inmate convicted of homicide disguised himself as a sheep in order to flee one of the most secured prisons in Bolivia earlier this month.
The Spider’s Escape Attempt
The notorious “El Araña (The Spider),” whose real name is José Luis Callisaya Diaz , was captured by prison guards while attempting to escape the Chonchocoro prison in La Paz on February 4th.
Crawling His Way To Freedom

Surveillance footage showed Diaz wrapped in sheepskin, crawling his way across the grassy area in Chonchocoro to reach the perimeter walls to the other side.
Evading Security

He managed to evade security long enough to reach the walls, but while he was on his way there, a jail guard noticed that Diaz was missing from his cell.
Surveillance Saves The Day
They checked the cameras and sure enough, Diaz was spotted wearing his homemade sheep costume and making his way toward the exit.
The guards quickly intercepted him before he could make it to freedom.
A Cold Weather Escape

According to the prison officials who responded to the situation, Diaz must have thought that trying the cold weather would help his escape plan.
Facing Disciplinary Action
Following the escape attempt, authorities have issued a strict mandate for legal and disciplinary actions to be enforced against the runaway convict.
A Statement From The Director
Juan Carlos Limpias, current Director of the Penitentiary Regime in Bolivia, released a statement, saying, “We inform the Bolivian population that prison security police officers from the San Pedro de Chonchocoro Penitentiary Center prevented the escape of prisoner José Luis Callisaya Diaz (alias El Araña), who took advantage of the inclement weather to try to flee through one of the walls of the external perimeter of the prison.”

Netizens were both shocked and amused by the botched escape, almost unable to believe his ill-thought plan.
Most Users Find It Funny
One user said, “aye man, it almost work someone probably snitched ☠️”
Another comment read, “shawsheep redemption”.
But Some Have Doubts

“Let’s not kid ourselves…With everything I know about our own prison system, he probably got a lot farther than they’re admitting…”
15 Years For Homicide
Diaz is currently serving 15 years in Chonchocoro prison due to murder charges.
There’s no information about what crime he did exactly, but we can only assume it’s not something light considering that he found himself incarcerated in Chonchocoro, one of the most well-known prisons in Bolivia.
A One-Of-A-Kind Prison

Also known as El Penal de San Pedro (San Pedro Prison), San Pedro de Chonchocoro Penitentiary Center is a self-run high-security prison located in La Paz, Bolivia. It’s the largest prison in the area and is infamous for its unique way of handling its inmates.
A Community Of Inmates

More than a prison, it’s also a community , a microcosm of the South American country as a whole. Inmates get to have jobs, purchase their own sales, and live with their wives and children.
Facilities At San Pedro Prison

There’s even a school for the inmates’ children and a prison hotel where guests can stay and visit their loved ones.
No Easy Way Out

That said, prison officials won’t tolerate any attempt to escape or disrupt the peace within the walls.
Still A Mystery
No further details have been released at this time, but it’s still unclear how he managed to acquire the sheepskin.
Prison Breaks

Diaz’s daring escape goes to show that even in a seemingly safe and secure environment, criminals can still find ways to try and break out.
Prioritizing Security Measures
It’s a reminder of the importance of maintaining strict security measures in order to ensure the safety and protection of all citizens.
How Far You’ll Go For Freedom
Nevertheless, Diaz’s laughable yet ultimately failed attempt to escape from the prison is a reminder of the lengths some people will go to evade justice.
