The Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon has already caused some controversy for one of its young stars.
House of the Dragon seems to already have the world tuned in, but just because everyone is watching doesn’t mean everyone is being nice. Emily Carey, 19, has spoken out after receiving backlash for speaking about her character ahead of the show’s premiere on August 21st, after fans of the show accused her of having not read the book the show is based on.

Emily, who plays Alicent on the show, recently faced backlash for comments she made about her character at Comic-Con.
“I think it gave me a deeper understanding of Alicent,” she said of creating a backstory for the character. “I think she’s so multifaceted. There are so many layers to her. I think lots of people are already expecting her to be the villain of the show, but I think bringing her in younger, there was a lot more to explore.”
Fans of the book series the show is based off took issue with her comments.
Fans took to Twitter to imply that if Emily felt that her character wasn’t the villain of the show, that she hadn’t read or understood the book the show was based off of.
In a since-deleted tweet, Emily fired back against these fans.
“I stand by what I said in the panel,” she tweeted.
“Alicent is not the villain, folks. When we meet her she’s a child, a product of the patriarchy. Just you wait and see. Maybe you’ll sympathize,” she tweeted .
Despite this defense of her comments, Emily would go on to delete the tweet and even, temporarily, delete her entire Twitter account.
“I love social media,” Emily said in an interview of this moment.
“I’m 19, so I’m all on social media, and I’ve been on social media since I was a kid because I’ve worked since I was a kid, so I’m very conscious of things,” she told News.com.au . “Any hate that comes in, it’s just…it’s a person behind a screen. You just have to move on from it.”
“I will say I did delete Twitter [after Comic-Con] because it’s just so loud,” she went on.
“I love the buzz, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes it can be overwhelming, and that’s me being completely transparent.”
