It All Started During The Lockdown

She Isn’t Bothered

Continuing her conversation on the show, Helen expresses how she feels about those who might criticize her hair choices. She says, “I started growing my hair, and I hadn’t actually had long hair since I was in my 20s. And it sort of grew and grew and grew, and I couldn’t be bothered to cut it, basically.”
Age Limit For Hair?
While on the Lorraine show with Lorraine Kelly, she talks about the growing stereotype that suggests older women aren’t “supposed” to let their hair grow long. She reveals some comments she has heard regarding aged women and hair: “You’re not supposed to have longer hair after a certain age,” — while going against what she perceives people think is the norm.
Breaking Down Standards

She’s Keeping It
Keeping up with her radical attitude, Helen also shares with Kelly that she won’t be cutting her chest-long hair anytime soon. In her words, “I thought, do you know what, it’s pretty cool; I think I’ll stick with it for a little while. It will come off eventually.”

And find enjoyment, if it’s possible in your life.”
Activist For Older Women
Talking about ageism in 2019 with Glazia , Helen insists her generation has been stereotyped for “far too long.” She also shared, “It’s extremely annoying to women of my generation and others following mine to have beauty products sold on a 15-year-old face.”
Bad Term

In the same discussion, she also revealed she prefers not to use the term “beauty” because it fuels insecurity for people that don’t see themselves as beautiful. She says, “They’ll think, ‘well, I’m not very beautiful. It’s all very well for all these beautiful women, but I don’t feel beautiful.'”
No One Should Be Excluded
Finishing off her statement on stopping the use of “beauty” to describe people, Helen mentions wanting to make people feel good about themselves. She said, “I don’t want to exclude these people from feeling fabulous about themselves.”
Mirren Vs. Anti-aging

That’s not all from Helen about terms she doesn’t like. Speaking with The Cut in 2021, she refers to the term “anti-aging” as “demeaning.” She also dropped some advice for those who would want to avoid having their aging features showing: “We age. It happened. I’m really sorry, but you know what? It happens, and there’s no way out.”
For All Ages
Referring to companies making beauty products with The Cut , she advises them to avoid the use of “anti-aging” words. She says, “In a way, with each era, it’s the start of something new, so I absolutely believe in beauty products for all ages and all skin types, but I don’t like the word ‘anti-aging’. I think it’s demeaning, actually.”
Broken Finger

Her Bravery

She said she didn’t complain because she wanted to keep a real “stunty” persona on set. “I was incredibly brave and didn’t say anything or complain because I wanted to be a real ‘stunty’ person.”
Hush About Her Movie

When asked about her upcoming movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods , the award-winning actor tells Kelly, “Don’t ask me about the plot, it’s too complicated! We are angry goddesses wearing unbelievably heavy costumes. It was very hot and uncomfortable.”
Tough Scenes
While explaining the weight of her and her fellow co-stars’ costumes, she reveals how hard the production was for them. In her continuing statement, she says, “…and in fact, Lucy (Liu) said at the end of the first day’s shooting, ‘They are trying to kill us in all seriousness.'”
She Loved The First Part

Revealing why she hopped on the train for part 2 of Shazam! Helen says, “I wanted to do it because I loved the first Shazam . It was sweet and funny. I am not a big superhero type person, but I loved the idea of it and happily signed up for the second one. It is great.”
