Gymnast Livvy Dunne is facing backlash as she continues to gain attention for posting figure-flaunting promo shots to social media. The 20-year-old Louisiana State University gymnast has proven one of the fastest-rising NCAA faces this year – she’s the most followed NCAA athlete on social media and boasts a mass following on both TikTok and Instagram. Livvy is said to have earned $2 million from her online activities, as she fronts brands including Forever 21, American Eagle, and Plantfuel. Now, she’s facing criticism over how she portrays herself online.
Getting Shade For Social Media Posts
Livvy has been discussing her net worth. “Seven figures. That is something I’m proud of. Especially since I’m a woman in college sports,” she told The New York Times , adding:
“There are no professional leagues for most women’s sports after college.” The New Jersey native has gotten the thumbs-down from Stanford’s college basketball coach Tara VanDerveer.
She told the NY Times : “I guess sometimes we have this swinging pendulum, where we maybe take two steps forward, and then we take a step back. We’re fighting for all the opportunities to compete, to play, to have resources, to have facilities, to have coaches, and all the things that go with Olympic-caliber athletics.” She also called it a “step back.”
Gaining Followers
On TikTok, where videos have topped 10 million views, Livvy boasts over 6 million followers. Meanwhile, on Instagram, she recently celebrated hitting the 2 million mark. Livvy has also proven a prominent celebrity face at red carpet events this year – she hit up the ESPYs earlier this year alongside Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman.
Opening Up On Social Media
Livvy has spoken out about being famous online. In 2021, she told NY Post :
“I don’t feel too much pressure, because doing social media is always something that I’ve loved, and I’ve always taken it pretty seriously,” adding: “At times, I can get overwhelmed with how busy things are, but I don’t feel pressure on a day-to-day basis.”
Brands Want Her
Livvy respects the #ad on Instagram. She regularly posts to shout out American Eagle. Her first major brand deal was with Vuori Clothing – she continues her dealings with the clothing company she joined in 2021.
“I think it’s great for female student athletes in gymnastics like myself because there is really no professional league after college, so we can capitalize on our opportunities right now. It’s such a special thing. It’s like I’m part of history, all of us student athletes are,” Livvy also told the NY Post .
