Earlier this month, as the FIFA Club World Cup final took place, Donald Trump caused a bit of a ruckus when he did an unexpected act that many have since deemed ‘embarrassing’.
Players for the winning team have also commented on it.
Chelsea won earlier this month
On July 13, Chelsea won the FIFA Club World Cup against Paris Saint-German at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
But while the players were celebrating the memorable moment, something confusing happened that put them off balance.
President Trump stayed on stage
Although President Donald Trump was meant to hand the team their trophy and then get off the stage, he stayed.
The president remained alongside the players at the center of the stage as they celebrated their win.
This came as a surprise to them
A lot of viewers described the moment as ‘absolutely embarrassing’, while some players for the team themselves expressed bemusement with it.
Chelsea player Marc Cucurella spoke out about how he and his teammates felt during the awkward moment with Trump on stage.
It was certainly an odd moment
Cucurella told Spanish journalist Gerard Romero about the odd moment with Trump.
According to a translation of their conversation, the player said, “We had been told that, as a rule, Donald Trump would come to present us with the trophy and that we couldn’t lift it until he left.”
Cucurella was scared in that moment
“We were all there waiting for him to leave – but the guy didn’t want to leave – and on top of that, we looked at him and he said, ‘Lift it up, I’ll stay here’, and so on,” Cucurella added.
“I wondered who would say anything to him, you know… I was scared s***less.”
Cole Palmer also commented on it
Fellow teammate Cole Palmer also expressed his confusion with Trump’s lingering onstage during the team’s celebrations.
He said, “I knew he was going to be there, but I didn’t know he was going be on the stand where we lift the trophy. So, I was a bit confused.”
Trump also apparently kept the trophy
Another odd twist that occurred was that Trump actually kept the original trophy, with Chelsea players being left to celebrate with a replica.
Trump told DAZN that FIFA gave him the trophy as a gift.
It’s currently at the Oval Office
Trump said, “They [FIFA] said: ‘Could you hold this trophy for a little while?’ We put it in the Oval Office and then I said: ‘When are you going to pick up the trophy’, and [FIFA President Gianni Infantino] said: ‘We’re never going to pick it up, you can have it forever in the Oval Office.”
“And they actually made a new one [for Chelsea] but right now [the original] is in the Oval.”
