Let me ask you, what’s your favorite pastry? If you said croissant, you’re in luck because this story is all about that. What I’m going to tell you might shock you, but apparently, we’ve all been eating croissants wrong.
Oh, yeah! At least according to one etiquette expert. So brace yourself for a little social manners lesson you never asked for.
William Hanson (@williamhansonetiquette) is a British etiquette coach with 37 million followers on TikTok!
So, I guess he does know a thing or two about etiquette after all. In a recent TikTok video, he went over the “correct” way to eat a croissant. According to him, there are a few things the British just don’t do.
For example, you are never to dunk your croissant in coffee!
Come again? Oh, yes. That is a British faux pas. I can just hear what you’re about to say, “but isn’t that the best part?” I’m with you on this one. For me, it’s pretty much the reason to even eat a croissant.
And get this — you’re not allowed to dunk it in hot chocolate either, even though they might do that in France!
Aww! That’s not fair. I’m literally just about to make some coffee, take a croissant from the freezer, toast it up, and dunk it in that delicious hot beverage as we speak.
I don’t know about you, but I don’t like this so far.
Here’s another kicker. According to Hanson, “The croissant is made from butter, so no need to put more on top!” So now we can’t put butter on it either? Talk about taking the fun out of eating. Amirite?
So how can you eat it?
Hanson says that all you need is some jam or marmalade, which you can spread on the inside of the croissant. Okay, okay. Finally, something I can get behind here.
Judging by the comments his video got on TikTok, there were plenty of disapproving folks ready to chime in.
Tyler commented, “It’s proper British etiquette to never enjoy the food you’re eating.” LOL. And then another mused, “Why does Britain hate good-tasting food?” Now, let’s not blame all the British for one man’s rules, OK, guys?
And then there were some acts of defiance.
Apparently, you can’t just tell people how to eat their croissant and not hear about it. I don’t know about you, but I tend to agree with these folks too. I’ll eat my croissant any way I like. That’s my God-given right!
I like the way these folks think.
Mmmm, the sound of a freshly baked croissant alongside hot coffee, bacon, and eggs does make my mouth water. That’s just the way I like it.
Then there was this comment that made me chuckle:
“The contradiction of using the French pronunciation of ‘croissant’ but not using the French method of eating it is hilarious.” Amen to that!

Or will you just throw the etiquette out the door and eat your croissant any way you like? Honestly, I agree with many of the commenters. British etiquette or not, I say enjoy your croissant however you want. Life is short, after all, and there are plenty of other, more important rules to follow. Do you get my drift?
