Eight Mile Style, the publishing company that controls Eminem’s early music catalog, is suing Mark Zuckerberg’s company, Meta, for over $109 million in damages.
They’re alleging copyright infringement
Court documents obtained by People show that Eight Mile Style has filed a lawsuit against Meta Platforms, the tech company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
They have accused Meta of copyright infringement and are seeking over $109 million in damages.
Eight Mile Style controls Eminem’s early music
The music production company was co-founded by Eminem’s production team, the Bass Brothers.
Eight Mile Style controls his early works, more specifically songs published between 1995 and 2005, but the rapper is not directly involved in the lawsuit.
The company alleges Meta violated copyright of songs
Eight Mile Style has alleged that the social media tech company violated the copyright of 243 songs from its catalog.
They’re claiming that this has happened through “unauthorized storage, reproduction and exploitation” of the songs on various Meta platforms.
The claims cite features of Meta apps
In its claims of copyright infringement, the music production company cites the various applications’ different features, such as Reels Remix and Original Audio, which “allow and encourage its users to steal Eight Mile Style’s music.”
The music company claims the loss of billions of streams
Eight Mile Style’s lawsuit also claims that their 243 songs were used in millions of videos and streamed billions of times “without proper attribution or license.”
They’re requesting $150,000 for each song
The rapper’s music publisher has requested $150,000 for each of the 243 songs, with the total damages coming up to a whopping $109,350,000.
These monetary damages are sought after the music company claimed there is a “diminished value of the copyrights by Defendants’ theft of them, lost profits, and Defendants’ profits attributable to the infringement.”
Eight Mile Style have also requested a jury trial
As well as monetary damages and maximum statutory damages, the music publishing company has also requested a jury trial for the case.
The suit explained that Eminem’s songs “are some of the most valuable in the world, and Eight Mile Style is very protective of these iconic songs.”
They seem to have tried to resolve it before
The lawsuit also states that some songs were removed from Meta’s platforms after Eight Mile Style complained earlier about their unauthorized distribution.
But that didn’t last long as Meta allegedly “reproduced and stored unauthorized unlicensed copies.”
