Former talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has revealed that President Donald Trump was the reason behind her permanent move to the UK.
She moved last November
The 67-year-old comedian and former talk show host Ellen DeGeneres moved from the US to the English countryside with her wife, Portia de Rossi, 52, in November of 2024.
They didn’t intend on staying for long
While the couple only intended on moving across the pond for a few months, they decided to permanently stay in England after news of Trump being re-elected, per the BBC.
She revealed the news in a conversation on Sunday, July 20, with English broadcaster Richard Bacon in the English town of Cheltenham.
It was rumored she moved because of Trump
Bacon brought up rumors that DeGeneres had moved because of Trump and asked her if they were true, to which she replied, “Yes,” per the BBC.
The former talk show host told Bacon she had initially only planned to stay for three or four months with her wife at their “part-time house” in the UK, but then Trump was re-elected.
DeGeneres explained how it happened
The comedian said she and her wife “got here the day before the election,” adding they then “woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in.’ … And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.’”
She expressed her love for life in the UK
Elsewhere in the conversation, the former host of The Ellen DeGeneres Show raved about her life in the UK, according to the BBC.
“It’s absolutely beautiful,” she said, adding that she and de Rossi are “just not used to seeing this kind of beauty. The villages and the towns and the architecture — everything you see is charming and it’s just a simpler way of life.”
She got to see snow in the UK
DeGeneres, who used to live in California, added, “We moved here in November, which was not the ideal time, but I saw snow for the first time in my life.”
“We love it here. Portia flew her horses here, and I have chickens, and we had sheep for about two weeks,” she added.
DeGeneres feels things are ‘just better’
The natural beauty of England isn’t the only thing making the couple happier about their life across the pond. “Everything here is just better — the way animals are treated, people are polite.”
“I just love it here,” she added.
