Queen Maxima might’ve had a little moment with Trump. And, well, people noticed.
Trump was over in the Netherlands for the NATO summit, held in The Hague on June 24 and 25. During the visit, he stopped by Huis ten Bosch Palace to meet with King Willem and Queen Maxima.
The three of them lined up for some press photos. Trump had his usual big smile going, gave a thumbs up. Nothing out of the ordinary… at first.
The moment was captured on camera and spread fast
The press were filming the photo-op, but it looked like Queen Maxima may have forgotten that part.
In a clip that’s been making the rounds online, you can see her mimic the shape of Trump’s mouth right after he said “thank you.”
Then she looked straight into the camera,The Office style, before they quickly cut away.
Social media users reacted with humor
“Queen Maxima mimicking Trump’s mouth movements really got me,” someone said.
Another wrote, “Poor lady just got herself an entire Truth Social post.”
A third person added, “WAIT A MINUTE WAS QUEEN MAXIMA OF THE NETHERLANDS MIMICKING DONAL TRUMP?”
Some felt the queen crossed a line
Not everyone saw it as just a funny moment. Some thought she was clearly mocking him.
“This is hilarious,” one user said. “I’ve never been a fan of our stiff monarchy, but Queen Maxima rocks it! Treat him like a baby.”
Not everyone found it amusing
Others didn’t laugh at all and thought the move was out of line, especially coming from a royal.
One person commented that it was “disrespectful.” Someone else was a lot harsher:
“What an unprofessional & b*tchy thing to do, not only for a woman of her age & position, but for a royal. I hope this gets back to President Trump (which it will, everything always does) & he acts upon it! What an a**sehole of a thing to do in front of the whole world.”
A body language expert weighed in on the encounter
Body language expert Darren Stantion had a few things to say about the photo, speaking on behalf of Genting Casino.
He said, “The photo of Trump, the King, and Queen Maxima shows the Queen to be the more dominant of the two Dutch royals.”
“The King can be seen looking ahead with the same self-soothing gesture, covering his abdomen, but the Queen is turned directly to Trump and mirroring his gestures – almost trying to assert her own dominance.”
The queen’s gesture appeared intentional to some observers
The fact that Queen Maxima made eye contact with the camera right after her gesture made it feel even more deliberate to a lot of viewers.
It was quick, but it didn’t go unnoticed.
