Lori Vallow Daybell, who earned the “Doomsday Mom” name due to her beliefs, led a life of crime as she was previously convicted for killing her two youngest children and a romantic rival.
Now, a jury in Arizona convicted her of conspiring to murder her estranged husband, Charles Vallow, in 2019, adding a life sentence to her already existing life sentences.
Why she conspired to kill her husband
According to prosecution, Lori conspired with her brother, Alex Cox, in July 2019 to shoot her husband to death at her home in the Phoenix suburb of Chandler.
Her aim was to hoard money from Vallow’s life insurance policy in order to marry her then-boyfriend Chad Daybell. Chad is an Idaho author whose novels shed light on religious prophecies and the end of the world.
Lori was her own attorney
Lori was her own defense during the trial despite her not having any legal expertise. The jury deliberated for three hours in total over two days.
Lori sat quietly as the verdict was read but would occasionally glance at jurors as they confirmed that they found her guilty of conspiracy to commit murder.
Being her own attorney was not a solid move
A juror, Victoria Lewis, expressed her opinion to one of the reporters outside the courthouse, saying that Lori dug her own grave, choosing to be her own representative.
“Many days she was just smiling and laughing and didn’t seem to take anything very seriously,” Lewis said, as per CNN.
The siblings’ side of the story
Lori alleged that Vallow chased her with a bat and that her brother, Alex, shot Vallow in self-defense after she left.
Alex also claimed that he acted in self-defense, but he passed away five months later from a blood clot in his lungs, according to medical examiners.
Another brother testified
Another brother of Lori’s, Adam Cox, testified on behalf of the prosecution, confirming that both Lori and Alex were behind Vallow’s murder.
Before Vallow’s death, both him and Adam wanted to hold an intervention for Lori, to mainstream her beliefs. This came after Lori told people her husband was not alive anymore and that a zombie was living inside his body instead.
Lori is set to face another trial
Lori is set to go on another trial in June for conspiring to murder Brandon Boudreaux, the ex-husband of Vallow Daybell’s niece, who survived the murder attempt.
The sentence she’ll serve for Vallow’s death will be determined after her second trial. She is already serving three life sentences for the Idaho murders.
