The 24-year-old country singer Conner Smith was involved in a fatal car accident in Nashville on Sunday, June 8, allegedly striking and killing an elderly woman who was walking in a crosswalk.
Nashville Police released a statement
A release by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department stated that Smith, who was driving a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck on Sunday, hit Dorothy Dobbins, who was 77 years old, as she was crossing the roadway inside a marked crosswalk.
The woman died at the medical center
After being struck, Dobbins was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she later passed away.
“The preliminary contributing factor for this crash appears to be Smith failing to yield the right of way to the pedestrian,” the release stated. “He showed no signs of impairment.”
There are no charges against the singer
Police said that investigation into the accident is still ongoing, with no charges being pressed against Smith “at present.”
The singer’s attorney addressed the incident
The 24-year-old’s attorney confirmed to People that Smith was “involved in a car accident that tragically claimed a life.”
“His heart goes out to Ms. Dobbins’ family during this incredibly difficult time,” the attorney added. “Mr. Smith continues to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation.”
The impact was not done on purpose
A source also stated that the crosswalk incident was an unintentional accident, and that Smith was neither intoxicated nor distracted by his phone while driving.
It took place on the last day of the annual CMA Fest, a festival where people come together in Nashville to celebrate country music.
Smith released his debut album last year
The Nashville-born country singer released his debut album Smoky Mountains only last year.
He was an opening act for Luke Bryan on tour, and was nominated for New Male Artist of the Year at the 2024 ACM Awards.
