Kat Von D Fans Are Furious At What They Claim Is An Eyeliner Packaging Scam

Kat Von D first entered the public spotlight via the reality TV tattoo shows "Miami Ink" and L.A. Ink." After the show was cancelled, she started her own makeup line for Sephora in 2008. One of her products is the Kat Von D Tattoo Eyeliner -- its packaging now has some fans upset.

Some people who have purchased the full-size version of the eyeliner for $20 discovered that when they crack open the plastic case, the cartridge inside that holds the makeup is actually the same size as the cartridge for $10 sample size.

This quickly became a thing on the Internet, and more and more customers were posting their evidence.

This person even busted their eyeliner open on video to show the proof. It's hard to argue with what's happening here.

Aside from the size of the eyeliner, another person said that is burns their eyes.

One person on Reddit came to Kat's defense by posting an explanation:

The packages display different weights. The regular size eyeliner is 0.55 mL and the travel-size is 0.2 mL. they probably use some of the same pieces to save on production costs - but just fill the tubes with different amounts of liquid. The product would not be on the shelves if they were lying about how many mL of product you're paying for.

A post by CompQueenVideos on Twitter shows how Kat Von D Beauty had been attempting to address the issue through some automated messages.

Von D herself took to her Instagram account to confirm that fan's theory:

The cartridges in both full size liners and mini liners are the same — it’s the amount of product inside each cartridge that is different. So, for example, the product fill on our full size Tattoo Liner is 0.55 ml, while the product fill for the mini is 0.2 ml - thats over DOUBLE the amount of product! Any brand who has an eyeliner with similar component on the market will tell you the same thing. You need that much cartridge space for the pigment to flow out. Hope this helps explain any confusion out there! Lotsa Love, [especially to all my haters].

Most of the responses to the makeup controversy have been a lot of outrage, but some folks are just sitting back and enjoying the drama.

Other folks are questioning why it took eyeliner for people to 'cancel' Von D due to her past controversies and her reported anti-vax stance.

So, nothing to see here? I guess consumers will ultimately decide that, but Von D's explanation makes a lot of sense. And her fans on IG seem supportive.

None of this seems to be fazing Kat too much. On the same day that she posted her defense of the eyeliner, she also posted this photo of her and her husband celebrating their one year anniversary.

And apart from her anniversary, she enjoyed a fine day out with her family recently. The controversy is definitely the past for her.

Eyeliner isn't the only company that Kat Von D has been taking a stance for online. There is no controversy here, but the tattoo artist and celebrity personality also recently celebrated the 5-year anniversary of The Great Frog in LA -- her "fave skull ring company."
