Grýla is a monster in Icelandic lore who feasts on children. During Christmas, she comes down from her mountain home to the towns below and captures children who have been misbehaving. She takes them back to her cave and eats them, typically in her favorite stew.

She has been married three times, and lives with her current husband Leppalúði in the Dimmuborgir lava fields. She also has 12 sons called the Yule Lads and one large black cat called the Yule Cat.
