20 Fascinating Photos With Amazing And Interesting Backstories

I don't know about you, but I for one am constantly amazed and impressed by the things people see and experience on a daily basis. They share these amazing stories with us through the photos they share online.

And the pictures in this list are no exception. They're funny, they're sad, they're heartwarming (maybe not all at once), and they're totally real.

"This entire rainbow is visible before Tropical Storm Nicholas hits in Texas."

The most amazing thing about this shot is that it was taken directly before a storm hit the area. It's the literal calm before the storm. A rainbow before it rains, instead of after, which is strange, but still cool.

"These eggs were laid in a village literally named for being a field for hens."

I guess it's pretty fitting that these eggs came from a place called Hensfield. I mean, it was probably named Hensfield because people started farming chickens there. But still, it's kind of fun in its own way.

"The way these trees at Higgins Beach —in Scarborough, Maine — have grown in curves as the result of hurricanes, extreme offshore winter winds, snow, and ice."

Nature is so cool, man. The way trees and other plants adapt to their surroundings, and shape themselves according to the weather conditions they face, is just incredible. Nature really is built to last.

"This location marker in Cape Town, South Africa includes Missouri as one of the locations."

This whole sign is kind of funny. They included Missouri of all places, alongside New York, but then they put Sydney in there as well. Sydney, which is a city, not a region. Yeah, I'm not sure what to make of this.

"The shirt on the left I’ve had since I was 6, the shirt on the right I recently bought new, over 20+ yrs later."

It's kind of funny that, all these years later, Sailor Moon is still popular (though, maybe with the people who liked her 20-30 years ago). So cool that this person found a near-identical shirt to the one they owned so long ago.

"This small town in CA, famous for horsing and ranching, has horseshoes spelling out “whoa” at the main stop/intersection."

Way to keep the theme going. You know, because "whoa" is the thing you say when you want a horse to stop (I think). And it's made of horseshoes. It's like, so many layers.

"There’s a fiberglass replica of Stonehenge in the middle of the wood in Elberta, Alabama. The locals refer to it as Bamahenge."

I've never been to Alabama, but I sort of imagine this being the kind of thing Alabama would do. Maybe because they nicknamed the structure Bamahenge, which is so straightforward, yet weirdly clever.

"This Woodstock, NY crystal ball has set the box next to it on fire with sunlight."

Why they'd be outside is beyond me. Luckily, glowhunter on Reddit added a bit more to the story, saying, "it was in a shop window when it caused the fire. The shopkeeper took the box outside afterwards." Weird.

"My mom’s car elbow rest after 7 years of use."

Yep, you can really tell that this car has been lovingly used for years. That kind of wear doesn't just happen; you'd really have to be in that car a lot. Just imagine all the stories that car holds, given how often it's been used.

"A fellow coworker and I burned a checkerboard into the stump of an old tree. We played the first game with dandelion and clover flowers."

This is such a cute idea! This natural chess board is very cottage core if you ask me, and just seems like the result of two coworkers deciding to do something random yet fun. Such an awesome story.

"The first complaint "letter" (made from clay) was sent in 1750 BC in Mesopotamia from a man named Nanni to a merchant named Ea-nasir."

"Nanni was mad that he received the incorrect grade of copper that he had already paid for and that the merchant was rude to his servant when confronted."

Honestly, the more things change, the more they stay the same.

"In Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring (2001) they used a giant prop ring for close-up shots."

Hopefully I didn't just ruin a bit of movie magic for some of you out there. But you still have to admit that this is pretty cool. Before the days of CGI taking over everything, they still used cool props like this.

"Me and my daughter (3) both have clubbed thumbs - no thumb wars for us!"

I guess there's no doubt here that this is parent and child. Since they have such similar thumbs, I'm sure they have pretty similar faces, too. But it must be kind of sad, never knowing the epic highs and lows of a thumb war.

"This is the first meme ever, according to the internet. The meme was introduced in a comic strip from the University of Iowa’s satirical magazine 'The Judge' from 1921."

Well, the meme as we know it today had to have come from somewhere. And honestly, this exact format is still used today. I'm actually pretty sure I saw a meme like this last night.

"After the Ajka alumina sludge spill, 2010."

At first, this kind of looks like two pictures sliced together. But it's the result of alumina sludge hitting the trees and ground in Hungary, back in 2010. It's kind of cool to look at, but in more ways than one it's kind of terrifying.

"A house in my neighborhood has these plaques outside commemorating former residents who became victims of the Holocaust."

These plaques are very solemn, yet incredibly important. These people had lives and homes at one point, and while the world has moved forward, we can't leave these people behind.

"When I work with industrial magnets, I have to heat my tools in the oven to get rid of magnetic fields."

I had no idea that magnetic fields could be so powerful. But seeing as the average person doesn't work with industrial magnets, how would we know?

Still, what a strange yet fascinating process.

"Elephant gives birth to twins at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage."

Considering the fact that elephants are on the endangered species list, an elephant birth is always a pretty big deal. But this elephant had twins, which is, like, twice as big of a deal! At this point, they already look healthy, which is such a good thing.

"Funny, I allergy tested a horse today."

Well, it looks like this horse is allergic to something (or more than one something), which kind of sucks for the horse. Hopefully, though, the people who tested it can figure out what it's allergic to and, like, keep it away from that stuff. Hopefully.

"This was a couple of years ago, but here's a photo of the Toblerone chocolate with its original mountain."

In case you didn't know, the mountain on Toblerone packages is based off the Matterhorn, which is a very real mountain in the Swiss Alps. Fitting, since Toblerone is a Swiss Chocolate brand.

Cool that this person found the right angle and everything.
