Everyone knows that getting married is quite the expensive event. Even those who either haven’t yet gotten married or are choosing not to could tell you that the wedding industry is a lot less about the union of great love and more about the union of your credit card and the debit machine.
When you have familial tradition to consider on top of putting on a picturesque ceremony for way too many people, the purchases start to add up real quick.
However, brides have started getting PRETTY creative with their wedding purchases in recent years.
From fast food apps to wedding parties rather than catered ceremonies, there are ways that one can prevent breaking the bank while getting married.
You’ve just gotta throw on that thinking cap and get ready to DIY the ever-living-heck out of your life. Oh, and that Pinterest board filled with Vera Wang dresses? Maybe set your expectations a little lower.
One bride from Pakistan decided to take an unconventional route with her wedding day outfit.

The unnamed bride filmed a segment of her wedding for Daily Pakistan, and though her dress and makeup were breathtaking, many viewers had trouble diverting their attention away from the…um, obvious distraction.
Instead of traditional jewelry, the bride wore a necklace, earrings, and headpiece made of tomatoes.

And this wasn’t a prank either.
In the Daily Pakistan interview , shared and reposted by Twitter user Naila Inayat, the bride explains that because of rising tomato prices in the region, tomatoes are now considered quite the luxury item.
In certain parts of Pakistan, tomato prices have risen to Rs 400 ($5.5) per kilogram.
The bride explained that her tomato jewelry was meant to send a scathing message: food should not cost as much as rare jewelry.
“Gold prices are on the rise,” she says, “Tomatoes and pine nuts have also become very expensive.”
“That is why I chose to wear tomatoes instead of gold on my wedding.”

She continued to explain that she also gifted her wedding guests pine nuts because of how those prices have risen as well.
That’s certainly one way to raise awareness.

We love a wedding queen who can send a political message while walking down the aisle. When else in your life are that many people going to be watching?
Are you supportive of this bride’s fashion choice?
Was this an effectively sent message, or are fruit earrings just too ridiculous in a situation like this?
At least she’s rolled the catering and outfit costs into one!
