This is not Bella’s week.
After being blackmailed by a hacker that gained access to nude photos of her, Bella Thorne is being dragged by Whoopi Goldberg for taking the photos in the first place.
For the uninitiated, this is Bella Thorne.
Thorne is a singer, model, and actress best known for her days on Disney’s Shake It Up , where she co-starred with Zendaya.
She also just released her first book of poetry, although she’s written three other novels.
Thorne is the author of the Autumn Falls trilogy, and just released The Life of a Wannabe Mogul: Mental Disarray , a book of poetry chronicling her personal struggles, relationships, and everything to do with fame.
It looks like Bella might have some new inspiration for her follow-up book.
Last weekend, Bella Thorne’s naked photos were uncovered by a hacker that later tried to blackmail her with them.
But Bella was not about to let that happen.
Instead of letting the hacker win, she went ahead and posted the photos online herself.
She shared screenshots of the hacker texting her, along with all of the nude photos , and this note — calling them out.
While many fans applauded her for taking back her power and not letting somebody threaten her, some criticized her for taking the photos to begin with.
Obviously, this is a pretty narrow, dated way to look at the situation .
Whoopi Goldberg was one of those people, unfortunately.
When the topic was brought up on The View , Whoopi took an unexpected stance — essentially blaming Bella for getting herself into this mess.
Co-host, Sunny Hostin, sympathized with Bella, calling the situation “terrible”.
But Whoopi challenged that.
“Listen, if you’re famous, I don’t care how old you are, you don’t take nude pictures of yourself,” she argued .
“When they’re hacking you, they’re hacking all of your stuff,” she continued.
“So, whether it’s one picture or a million pictures , once you take that picture, it goes into the cloud, and it’s available to any hacker who wants it.”
“If you don’t know that in 2019, that this is an issue … you don’t get to do that.”
“You cannot be surprised that someone has hacked you. Especially if you have stuff on your phone, that’s why they’re hacking you,” she concluded .
Some people online definitely agreed.
Some people agreed that Thorne should’ve known better than to share any pictures that she wouldn’t want leaked publicly, since that’s just how the Internet works now.
Some people had the nerve to imply Thorne may have done this on purpose.
Like this Twitter user, who implied this was simply Thorne’s way of garnering publicity and that she just wanted to be a victim.
Other people saw both sides.
Some people thought that while women should be allowed to do what they wish with photos of their own body and still be able to expect privacy, there were different rules for people who were famous.
Bella had her fair share of supporters.
Tons of fans flooded her Twitter replies with messages of love and support, saying that she had nothing to be ashamed about, and that her taking the power away from the hacker was inspiring.
She even had some unlikely support.
Like this 60-year-old father, who applauded Bella’s strength and said he was standing at her side through all of this. His kids are really lucky to have such a supportive and understanding father!
As though being blackmailed wasn’t enough, Bella’s morale took an even bigger hit after hearing Whoopi’s thoughts on the matter.
She called out Whoopi in a note and a tearful video.
“Dear whoopi,” she wrote. “I have loved u for so long but honestly I’m so displeased and saddened by your response to my leek,” she wrote.
“Blaming girls for taking the photo in the first place? Is sick and honestly disgusting,” she went on. “So what a girl can’t send her boyfriend that she misses photos of her that are sexy?”
“Things he’s already seen? I as a women should be so scared walking around my home, being on my phone, doing anything? Is that what u want our women to be like? Scared of the masses for their sexuality?”
“Is that what u want? I don’t. I’m offended for anyone out there that has ever taken a sexy photo,” she wrote.
“I am offended for Jennifer Lawrence who feels publicly raped,” she said — referencing the time Jennifer was hacked in 2014.
“I am offended for every person who has committed suicide for someone leaking their nudes.”
“Ur view on this matter is honestly awful and I hope u change ur mind set as u are on a show talking to young girls,” she concluded.
In a series of videos, Bella elaborated even further on how Whoopi’s comments affected her.
“I just wanna say that me watching this interview made me feel really bad about myself,” she said.
“I hope you’re so [expletive] happy because I can only imagine all of the kids who have their [expletive] released and then they commit suicide.”
She added that she will be canceling her interview on “The View” going forward to avoid being “beaten down by a bunch of older women .”
“Shame on you for putting that public opinion just out there like that for every young girl to think that they’re disgusting for even taking a photo like that. Shame on you.”
“Saying if you take a sexy photo then it basically deserves to get leaked, like, don’t be surprised at all and don’t feel sorry for yourself,” she continued .
Thorne also cancelled her upcoming interview on ‘The View.’
“I don’t really want to go on ‘The View’ anymore because I don’t really want to be beaten down by a bunch of older women for my body and my sexuality,” Thorne said in the video.
“So, if I go out to a party drinking and I wanna dance on the dance floor, do I deserve to be raped too?”
“Because to me, I see those two things as really [expletive] similar,” she concluded.
Hopefully, Bella was able to reach Whoopi and offer another perspective.
