HELLO! spoke to the former royal protection officer, who explained everything.
Basically, it’s all on a case-by-case basis.
Sometimes, not wearing a seat belt is for their own safety — just in case they need to quickly escape in an emergency.
There’s no doubt that they royals can find themselves in some potentially messy crowds, and they don’t have time to fiddle around with seat belts.
“In the threat and risk matrix it’s a matter of looking at each individual situation to decide what is the best way of achieving what needs to be achieved. For example, considering that a quick entry or exit to a vehicle is easier when people aren’t strapped into seatbelts,” he explained.
It can also come down to what the person is wearing, and their personal preference.
He explained, “Protection is a very unique area of policing and there are a lot grey areas, but you are always judging each situation to weigh up the risks and threats with the outcomes you are trying to achieve.”
According to HELLO!, there are certain times that the law doesn’t require a seat belt to be worn.
For example, if a person is involved in a procession organized by the Crown, or if it’s customarily held.
They’re also exempt if the vechile doesn’t have a seat belt to begin with. Say if it’s a classic car, for example.
Of course, they royals don’t always go without a seat belt.
Based on paparazzi photos, Prince William and Kate tend to always buckle up when their kids in the car. It’s important to set a good example!
