Everybody gets a lyric wrong every now and then, unless you have superhuman hearing or are constantly googling songs before you try to sing along with them. Whether you’ve turned “Lucy in the sky with diamonds” to “Lucy’s in a fight with Linus” or you’ve made Uncle Kracker sing “give me the Beach Boys” instead of “beat boys” to free his soul, it happens to the best of us.
Apparently, according to Katy Perry, it’s been happening to ALL of us, regarding one of her biggest hits.
You have to remember Katy Perry’s smash hit Firework.

Not only did the “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag?” opening line instantly strike a chord with many listeners, the song hit number one on the Billboard charts and has been certified 12x platinum.
The song is everywhere, and it’s super fun to sing along to.
According to Katy herself, though, we’ve all been singing the wrong words.

During a recent filming of American Idol , Katy’s fellow judge Luke Bryan was singing the song as we all know and love it — “make ’em go ah, ah, ah.”
Katy responds by shocking all of us everywhere, saying, “It’s not ‘up, up, up’, and it’s not ‘ah, ah, ah.'”
“What is it? I’ve been dying to know.” Luke asked, and that was when Katy revealed the truth.

“It’s awe, awe, awe. A-W-E,” Katy said. “It’s ‘awe, awe, awe,’ everybody, get it right!”
On her Instagram, Katy revealed the inspiration for that line, which comes from a pretty famous Kerouac passage about fireworks, which ends with “you see the blue centerlight pop and everybody goes, ‘Awee!'”
You can watch the exchange for yourself right here.
Have you been getting the words right this whole time, or were you like all of us (and apparently Luke Bryan) singing up, up, up, oh, oh, oh, or ah, ah, ah? Let us know in the comments!
