It’s that time of year again: the air is a little bit cooler, kids are bummed out and parents are rejoicing. That’s right, it’s back-to-school time.

It’s a solid idea that makes for a great keepsake. Using boards like this as inspiration, residents at Garden View Assisted Living in Carroll, Iowa, filled in their own versions of these boards — and the advice is invaluable.
There’s no such thing as a dumb question.
93-year-old Don’s sign speaks to an unassailable truth. While it may be easiest to just sit there in class and say nothing, asking questions is one of the best ways to learn about new things.

This is the kind of no-nonsense advice that every kid is told, and too few seem to actually take in. When someone who knows what they’re talking about starts talking, it’s always good to listen.

While I can certainly appreciate, and vouch for, Rita Ann’s assertion that a college education is a good thing, the whole “your” thing is bugging me. Then again, when you’re 88 years old, the odd typo isn’t a big deal.
School isn’t so bad.
I misread this at first, thinking Helen’s message was about how hard life gets later on. I sadly agreed, then realized her actual message is a little more optimistic than that.

Jim’s got the right idea. We may live in the time of tablets and smart devices, but there’s really no high-tech substitute for reading. And yeah, make sure to enjoy yourself as well.
Absorb the information.
Retaining knowledge is super key, especially as kids get older and start learning about more complex things. Childhood is the best time to absorb a lot of this stuff.

I like how Marie is proud of her age (and anyone who lives to 97 years old seriously should be proud), but she’s a little shy about talking about what year she graduated.
Tough but fair.
Arnie is a man of few words, and he doesn’t sugarcoat. No kid wants to hear it, but this is basically the essence of education: study, study, study — and when you’re done, study a little more.
Just do your best.
