Here are 10+ facts about Harry Potter that only hardcore book fans know.

Ginny and Hermione were close friends

Ginny doesn’t get as much recognition or scenes in the movies as she deserves, so many fans might not know that Hermione and Ginny were also very close friends.

Hermione would stay in Ginny’s room while at the Burrow, so the two girls got to know each other. Hermione even gave advice to Ginny about Ginny’s crush on Harry.

Charlie Weasley comes to Hogwarts to support Harry during the Triwizard Tournament.

Charlie Weasley is the other Weasley son that never is shown in the movies, but most book fans do know of him.

While he’s the least important to the books of any Weasley, he goes with Molly to Hogwarts before the third task to provide emotional support for Harry since Harry doesn’t have family who would come.

Fred was punished for trying to put an Unbreakable Vow on Ron.

Arthur is usually the calmer of the two parents, but when Fred tried to have Ron make an Unbreakable Vow when they were kids, Arthur lost his temper.

While getting angry wasn’t good, Fred could have done something very undoable and serious to Ron.

Professor Trewlaney used crystal balls as a weapon.

There are many characters in the books and the movies who show up at the Battle of Hogwarts, so not all of the characters and details from the books made it to the screen.

Professor Trelawney was there, and she used some of her crystal balls to throw them at Death Eaters.

Aunt Muriel criticizes Ginny’s dress.

Aunt Muriel is a character that only has a very brief appearance in the films, but she makes more of an impression in the books when she’s a guest at Bill and Fleur’s wedding.

She’s a relative of the Weasley’s, and she’s judgemental and opinionated. She tells Ginny that her dress is “far too low cut.”

Ron got a new pet owl.

After Scabbers is revealed to be Peter Pettigrew, Ron ends up getting a new pet, a small owl, that Sirius Black gives to him.

He names the owl Pigwidgeon thanks to input from Ginny Weasley who called the tiny owl, “Pig.”

Harry and Ron stay at Hogwarts for Christmas their third year.

In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry and Ron are just a handful of students who remain at the school during the break.

In fact, it’s such a small group that the remaining staff and students all sit together at one table for Christmas dinner, and there are only 13 people there.

Teddy Lupin was raised by his grandmother.

Teddy Lupin, Tonks and Remus’ son, was just a baby when his parents tragically died at the Battle of Hogwarts.

But, most fans don’t realize that he was raised by his mother, Andromeda Tonks, even though Harry was his godfather.

Bill and Fleur had three children.

Another fact about Teddy Lupin is revealed in the epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows .

He shows up on the platform to get on the Hogwarts Express, and he’s kissing Bill and Fleur’s daughter, Victoire. Bill and Fleur also had two other children, Dominique and Louis.

Lily ended her friendship with Snape over his friends.

While most fans know that Snape called Lily a Mudblood while they were at Hogwarts, there was another reason that Lily eventually cut all ties with him.

She was understandably troubled by his Death Eater friends, and this made her realize that they were on completely different paths.

The Department of Mysteries has a brain room.

The Department of Mysteries contains many strange rooms and devices that aren’t shown in the movies.

One of the most mysterious is a chamber that’s empty save for a container full of moving brains. The purpose of this room is never explained.

Hermione considered giving her parents toothflossing mints.

Not all fans know that Hermione’s parents were both dentists, but this is mentioned in the books.

In fact, during a visit to Honeyduke’s in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban , Hermione wonders if she should get her parents mints that also floss teeth.

Arthur and Molly Weasley took nighttime strolls at Hogwarts.

The Weasley parents started dating at Hogwarts, and they got up to a little trouble here and there.

They would break the rules by taking night strolls through the grounds of the castle, but they got caught by Apollyon Pringle, the castle caretaker at the time.

Harry kept food hidden under the floorboards in his room.

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire , Dudley is put on a diet by his parents, and Harry is forced to go along with it.

So, he asks Hermione, Ron, and Hagrid to send him food, and they oblige by sending him cakes and candies.

Harry keeps these items under the floorboards so his aunt and uncle don’t find them.

Harry thought Snape could read minds in book one.

Warner Brothers

Way back in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone , Snape’s ability to read minds, known as Legilimency, is foreshadowed.

Harry thinks to himself that he “sometimes had the horrible feeling that Snape could read minds.” This premonition turned out to be true.
