A young woman on TikTok has shared her ‘big sis advice’ to her peers who are struggling to save up.
She revealed five habits that, when removed from her life, she was able to save up almost $135,000 in savings and investments.
She’s looking to retire early

Mia Rose McGrath, 24, is looking to ‘soft retire’ by the age of 40, as she lives a thrifty lifestyle that has helped her build ‘almost £100,000 [$135,000] in savings and investments’.
Mia, who lives in London and works in fashion, often posts to her 154,000 followers on TikTok about her lifestyle.
She got straight to the point
In her video, the 24-year-old began sharing the five habits she believes are ‘keeping you broke’.
Starting off, she said, “Trying to be cool or aesthetic is making you broke.”
Mia advised not to spend money to look good for others

She went on to explain that buying a whole new outfit for Instagram or a Rhode phone case for over $50 in an attempt to be ‘aesthetically pleasing’ will cost you in the long run.
“I realized I was doing it for other people, not for myself,” she said from experience.
She went on to blame trends for the second habit
Mia shared that the second mistake people make is getting swept up in trends and trendy items that cost a lot of money and quickly go out of style.
“You don’t need the latest trending item – a Labubu, a Coach bag. It’s not essential,” she said.
Instead, she advised waiting 30 days before making a purchase in order to figure out if you really want something or are just swept up in a trend.
The third mistake would be avoiding saving
The savvy saver said the third financial mistake would be “not saving because you think it’s pointless.”
Mia shared that her $135k in savings started small; she was even putting money aside when she was relying on a student maintenance grant.
“I wouldn’t have been able to do that if I had that mindset that saving £50 [$67.5] is pointless,” she said.
She also recommended starting a side hustle

Mia’s fourth piece of advice was to start a side hustle, telling fellow content creators that they’re ‘not too busy’ to work on another source of income.
“Stop using the excuse that you don’t have enough time, you just don’t want to enough,” Mia said in a tough love approach.
She shared that working hard enough will get you there
The TikToker added that discipline is one of the main things required if someone wants to improve their financial situation.
She said, “Whatever it is, creating content, creating a personal brand, making extra money – I’ve done all those things while at a nine to five job that I have to be in the office five days a week for.”
Her final piece of advice was not to wait for a man
Mia’s final warning was that it’s irresponsible to think that a ‘man is going to sweep in’ and facilitate comfortable finances for you.
“There is so much bad advice on TikTok saying you need to appear in your “soft feminine energy” and go sit at a bar where a rich man will find you…” she said.
Mia strongly advised making your own money
“You have to work hard and have your own money,” the TikToker said, dismissing the myth of waiting for a rich man to provide for you.
She added, “Sure, if you meet someone who earns more than you, that’s a bonus. Make sure you have your own finances sorted first.”
