Sabrina Carpenter got candid about how she feels about people using their phones at concerts, and shared that she might even ban them from her own events.
She’s aware it would upset her fans
In an interview with Rolling Stone, when asked about banning phones at her concerts, the Espresso singer said that she’s well aware it “will honestly piss off my fans, but absolutely.”
Instead, the suggestion would be to lock the phones in a pouch for the duration of the show.
The singer has been to such a concert recently
Carpenter, whose new album Man’s Best Friend comes out August 29, shared that she’d been to a concert where she had to put her phone away too.
She said, “I went to see Silk Sonic in Vegas, and they locked my phone. I’ve never had a better experience at a concert.”
It felt like a more authentic experience
The artist added of the phone-free experience, “I genuinely felt like I was back in the Seventies — wasn’t alive. Genuinely felt like I was there. Everyone’s singing, dancing, looking at each other, and laughing. It really, really just felt so beautiful.”
But she understands the appeal of phones at concerts
The 26-year-old said the constant use of phones “unfortunately feels super normal” to her as she grew up in a time where people took the devices to concerts.
“I can’t blame people for wanting to have memories,” she said.
The singer just doesn’t want people to zoom in
Carpenter said that she just hopes people won’t focus too much on her face. “But depending on how long I want to be touring, and what age I am, girl, take those phones away. You cannot zoom in on my face.”
“Right now, my skin is soft and supple. It’s fine. Do not zoom in on me when I’m 80 years old up there,“ she added.
Carpenter wouldn’t be the first to ban phones
If she were to actually put this into action, Carpenter wouldn’t be the first to consider or even institute a phone ban at concerts.
Bob Dylan, Madonna, and Adele are among the musicians who have banned the devices from their concerts.
Adele explained she wants people to enjoy it ‘in real life’
Adele, 37, once called out a fan for filming during one of her concerts in 2016. During the show, she said, “I want to tell that lady as well, can you stop filming me with a video camera?” as per CBS.
“Because I’m really here in real life, you can enjoy it in real life, rather than through your camera,” she added at the time.
