This year’s Met Gala was another event full of show stopping outfits, with the theme having been ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’, focusing on celebrating Black fashion and dandyism, we saw a lot of glamorous looks.
But while many attended with bold outfits, some also showed up with questionable ones.
Many felt Lisa Manobal’s outfit was strange
K-pop singer Lisa Manobal, a member of the iconic girl group Blackpink and who recently appeared on The White Lotus, raised a few eyebrows with her outfit of choice for the 2025 Met Gala on Monday, May 5.
She wore a Louis Vuitton bodysuit
The pop star arrived on the red carpet wearing a Louis Vuitton bodysuit embroidered with a collage of different faces, one of which appeared to many as the face of the civil rights activist Rosa Parks.
The theme was celebrating Black style
The theme of the 2025 Met Gala was ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’, focusing on menswear and suit tailoring with an emphasis on Black dandyism.
The dress code was also ‘Tailored For You’, which encouraged attendees to dress in a way that felt authentic to them.
Louis Vuitton explained Lisa’s outfit
Vogue reported that artist Henry Taylor embroidered portraits into Manobal’s lace ensemble, with a statement by Louis Vuitton saying that the lace depicts “portraits of figures who have been a part of the artist’s life.”
However, there was no clarification on whether any of the portraits were famous faces.
The lace was most visible on her underpants
Manobal’s outfit was a bodysuit worn with LV tights, under an embroidered jacket, accessorized with a monogrammed handbag.
Although the lace embroidery appears in different parts of her outfit, the portraits are most visible on the crotch area.
Some people believe they saw the face of Rosa Parks
These embroidered portraits sparked a bit of anger online, with some viewers believing they spotted the face of civil rights activist Rosa Parks.
They’ve called it “disrespectful” as the face was placed in the lower area of her bodysuit.
The lack of explanation upset many
With LV having not clarified who the portraits on the outfit are of, many found the apparent use of Parks’ portrait to be “distasteful”.
“Whoever dresses Lisa tonight hates her,” one person wrote on X. “Why put Rosa Parks on her ass and crouch? A night celebrating black excellence, putting a civil rights icon on your booty?”
People didn’t feel the outfit respected the theme
Another person wrote, “NO BC WHAT DO YOU MEAN BLACKPINK LISA HAS ROSA PARKS EMBROIDERED ON HER UNDERWEAR?”
While another said, “WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA????? Mind you not only is it highly distasteful how is this on theme?”
It’s still unclear who the portraits are of
With the theme having been celebratory of Black fashion, and Louis Vuitton saying the portraits are made to be of people who mean a lot to the artist, it remains unclear whether the face everyone saw on the lower part of Manobal’s outfit really was Rosa Parks or not.
