If you’re among the billions of WhatsApp users around the world, we’ve got some news for you. The app is going to stop working on some phones starting May 5.
Here’s the tea.
WhatsApp will stop working on three iPhones
Starting May 5, WhatsApp will no longer work on these phones: iPhone 5s, 6, and 6 Plus. Bummer.
Well, it’s time to consider getting a new phone if you’re still using one of these.
Only iOS 15.1 or newer will be supported
Right now, if your phone runs iOS 12 or newer, you can still use WhatsApp.
But in just a bit over a week, you’ll need at least iOS 15.1 to keep it going.
Why older phones are losing support
WhatsApp said: “Every year we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users.
“These devices also might not have the latest security updates, or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp.”
Basically, the old phones just can’t keep up anymore.
iPhone 5s, 6, and 6 Plus are now obsolete
iPhone 5s came out in 2013, then 6 and 6 Plus were released a year later.
Apple stopped selling them in 2016 and then declared them obsolete. No more updates or service from Apple, either.
WhatsApp is not the only app impacted
It’s not just WhatsApp that’s ditching these older phones.
Apps like Spotify and Instagram have already dropped support for them, too.
Meta’s explanation for the update
WhatsApp says: “Devices and software change often, so we regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates.
“Before we stop supporting your operating system, you’ll be notified in WhatsApp and reminded a few times to upgrade.”
They’ll give you a heads-up before it happens.
iOS 15.1 is available on newer iPhones
The good news is if you have an iPhone 6s or newer, you can update to iOS 15.1 or higher.
That’s the version you need to keep using WhatsApp.
How to check your iOS version
Now let’s check which iOS version you’re running. Just go to Settings, tap General, then About.
Your version will be listed under iOS Version.
How to update to iOS 15.1 or higher
To update, let’s go to Settings, then General, and tap Software Update.
If there’s a newer version, tap Install Now to update, and preferably leave your phone plugged in.
Enable automatic updates to stay current
If you want to make sure you don’t miss future updates, turn on automatic updates.
Just go to Software Update in Settings and switch on Automatic Updates.
WhatsApp’s controversial AI feature
WhatsApp recently added a new blue circle icon that links to Meta’s AI chatbot.
Meta says: “Meta AI through WhatsApp is an optional service from Meta that can answer your questions, teach you something, or help come up with new ideas.”
But some people aren’t thrilled. One user said, “Okay, how do I get rid of Meta AI in WhatsApp? The button is constantly hovering in the way and I will never ever use it.”
Another joked, “Massive ‘ask AI’ button WhatsApp omg just leave me alone man.”
