As tensions rise between the US and Canada, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is fighting back in the ongoing trade war with US President Donald Trump.
Trump imposed tariffs on imported Canadian goods, especially with the latest being on vehicles and vehicle parts. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Carney is retaliating and calling all Canadian citizens to unite to “fundamentally reimagine” the country’s economy.
Their old relationship “is over”
After a cabinet meeting on Thursday, March 27, Carney spoke to reporters in Ottawa, saying that Canadians should “fundamentally reimagine our economy” in the face of the tariffs that Trump imposed.
Additionally, he deemed the old relationship between the US and Canada as over and done with, “based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation.”
Fight tariffs with tariffs
On Wednesday, March 26, Trump announced his intentions to target imported vehicles and vehicle parts with a 25% tax, stating: “This is permanent.”
In retaliation, Canada plans to impose additional tariffs on the US, claiming it will have a “maximum impact” on the Americans and the country.
The 1965 agreement was pivotal for Carney
Carney dubbed the 1965 original Canada-US Automotive Products Agreement the “most important deal in his lifetime.” However, he stated that “that’s finished with these tariffs” in French.
Carney believes that Canadians need to build an economy they can control, which includes their trade relationships with other partners.
But he will end things due to Trump’s tariffs
Carney said that he would end the “most important deal in his lifetime” with Trump due to the ongoing tariff war and the taxes that he plans to impose on vehicles by April 2 were the straw that broke the camel’s back.
He will stand tall against Trump
“We will respond forcefully. Nothing is off the table to defend our workers and our country,” Carney said, as reported by CNN.
“I reject any attempts to weaken Canada, to wear us down, to break us so that America can own us,” Carney added, and stated that “We are masters in our own home.”
Trump’s upcoming plans
Trump wrote on his platform, Truth Social, that he plans to impose “large scale Tariffs, far larger than currently planned,” on Canada and the European Union if they join forces to “do economic harm” to the US.
