The fast food wars have a new front line, and we’re not even done fighting over who has the best chicken sandwich. Seriously, folks are still debating Popeye’s versus Chick-Fil-A online! And don’t count out Wendy’s!
But the powers that be are already moving on, bringing us the next big thing to fight over, and it’s a comfort food staple: mac and cheese.
It didn’t take long for KFC to try to steal some of Chick-Fil-A’s thunder.
On August 12, Chick-Fil-A officially announced mac and cheese as its first new permanent menu item in three years.
A little over a week later, KFC made its announcement, and it’s almost like they were planning on one-upping their fried chicken rival the whole time.
Chick-Fil-A’s mac and cheese uses a “classic” recipe with cheddar, Parmesan, and Romano cheeses.

As mac and cheese goes, it’s about what you’d expect: elbows and melty cheese.
KFC’s on the other hand, takes some basic elbows and cheese, adds some popcorn chicken on top, then an extra layer of three-cheese blend, and you have a spicy option, with a dash of zesty Nashville hot sauce.
And now there’s news that Boston Market has some sort of mac and cheese plans, too.
“We’ve got something cooking at the moment — and not just in our rotisserie ovens — that will reward our biggest mac and cheese fans in a pretty massive way,” a Boston Market rep told Business Insider .
Sounds like it’s a good time to be a mac and cheese fan! KFC’s mac and cheese bowls will be available starting August 26.
