It's one of those that has completely dominated our mainstream culture in the last ten years or so, and will be remembered alongside the rest of the 2010 culture.
It also celebrates a lot of other movies in the horror genre.

And it helps when you have an executive producer like Greg Nicotero, who has worked on some of the biggest horror movies of all time.
He just loves putting easter eggs into episodes of The Walking Dead
One time, he had a zombie wear the same “I Got Wood” shirt as Nick Frost did in 'Shaun Of The Dead'.
Another time, he snuck a Necronomicon into Rick Grimes' last episode.
That's the last thing that the people in TWD need, to be fighting an army of deadites. They don't even have Ashe!
Well, there was one in the premiere of 'The Walking Dead' we completely didn't notice.
