While you know I love DIYing everything and anything, obviously somethings shouldn’t be DIY’d. Whether they should be left to the professionals, or they’re just too time consuming to do yourself, there are definitely somethings worth purchasing.
HOWEVER, there are a lot of things that are worth DIYing as well. Here are some of my top things to try instead of buying! I hope you enjoy them.
DIY Artwork
Guys, artwork is darn expensive. Like, I cannot even think about how much it costs to buy a one-of-a-kind piece of art. While I definitely see the value, if you can’t afford it then you should definitely think about doing some yourself!
The best part of abstract artwork is that you can really take your own spin.
There is no right or wrong answer, and the result will always be unique! Just take this piece by Sarah Hearts as inspiration for your next masterpiece.
DIY Jewelry
I am a huge fan of making my own jewelry! I can’t wear regular earrings, so I love making my own clip-on ones since they aren’t easy to find in stores. There are so many fun options for making your own!

DIY Thumbtacks
I am a huge sucker for anything cute and adorable, but I’m not about to spend a ton of money on fancy overpriced things like thumbtacks. So, why not make them yourself!
With a little bit of spray paint and some cute charms, you can def make your own!
I just love how cute these gold rose thumbtacks from Sadie Season Goods are! Maybe I’ll make a couple of them for the corkboard on my desk!
DIY Mouse Pads
I know I’ve written a lot about mouse pads (this is my second time today), but they are such a cute and easy way to add something funky to your desk.
And don’t bother buying one when you can make one this cute for cheap!
The Crafted Life shows us how to do it with just some cork and paint. Seriously, how easy and cheap is that?!
DIY Tassel Skirt
Next time you’re thinking about donating or tossing your clothes, think about what you can do to give them an upgrade instead. There are so many items you can DIY into something new!

DIY Table Runner
A colleague of mine was just asking for advice on where to buy a table runner, but I suggested she make something instead. Turns out, it’s actually pretty easy to do!
And this cool triangle pattern is perfect for any table!

DIY Cake Stand
I always want to buy a fancy cake stand, but it seems like a steep price to pay for something I wouldn’t use that often. So, why not make one for cheap instead?
You really just need a flat surface or plate, and something like a bowl to make it higher.

DIY Hand Towels
I always love looking at fancy hand towels, but man those things can get pricey! So it totally makes sense to me to buy a couple of blank ones and add your own flare!
I’ve actually done this before, and they look so cute!

DIY Area Rug
Got an area rug from Ikea that’s cute, but doesn’t quite fit your home decor? Turns out, there’s actually an easy and cheap way to turn it into a rug that matches!
These two rugs now match perfectly!
I’m impressed with how closely Shrimp Salad Circus was able to get these two rugs to match. I need a new area rug, so maybe I’ll try this out!
DIY Marble Hairpin Table
I am obsessed with anything with hairpin legs! I actually recently took a wood slab and added some legs, and I love it! So, here’s one for you to try.

DIY Tote Bags
Got a bunch of t-shirts laying around that you don’t want anymore? What about groceries that need to be brought into the house? This DIY tote bag is perfect for either of those!

DIY Pillow Covers
I am a huge fan of making my own pillow covers! Those things can add up REAL QUICK. Every cushion on my couch was made by me!
