Putting Peanuts In Coke Is Becoming A Food Trend And People Are Raving About It

Yes, you read that right, and no it's not a joke. One of the latest trends in the ever-more-bizarre landscape of food and drink is the trend of putting peanuts in your coke, because apparently that is where we're at as a species.

Bizarrely, however, people seem to really enjoy this salty beverage.

Funnily enough, salty beverage was a name we considered for our band in high school, what're the odds.

Anyway, the beverage/snack/whatever you call it reportedly came from the Southern America according to the National Peanut Board - and hey, they ought to know.

The method behind making the beverage is just as simple as you may imagine.

Simply open up a pack of salted peanuts (the saltier the better) and pour half the packet into your bottle or glass of coke.

Disclaimer: People with peanut allergies should probably give this one a miss as the product more than likely has trace amounts of peanuts. If it doesn't, you're doing it wrong.

It's important to let the peanuts marinade a little, and then you can eat them as a snack once your drink is finished.

However, according to the National Peanut Board this new trend may not actually be as new as people think. The website claims, "It is believed the idea started in the South in the early 20th century."

Food historian and author Rick McDaniel has speculated about how the drink may have been formed.

Mr. McDaniel estimates that, "working people may not have had a place to wash up…so you pour the peanuts directly in the bottle and your hands stay clean."

However, I imagine that the conversation more likely went like this:

"Hey, mate, bet you won't pour those nuts in your coke and drink it."

"Just watch me!"

People have been taking to social media to rave about the flavor sensation.

Tweets and comments have been befuddled, yet pleased with the discover of the sensation. A lot of people also recalled their grandparent's drinking it:

"I have lived my entire life in the south and have only just discovered the long and rich history of drinking coke with peanuts in the bottle/glass"

"Randomly starting thinking of my grandpa, who died when I was a sophomore in high school. So I ran down to that gas station and got peanuts to put in my coke. It's better with a glass bottle, but ain't bad in plastic."

However, one thing to be aware of is that Diet Coke and peanuts do not go!

Perhaps it's the artificial sweetener as opposed to natural sugar that doesn't pair well with the peanuts, but one thing is for sure, it doesn't!

So, before you make a fatal error, make sure you're buying full fat coke! (I mean, it generally tastes nicer anyway, so you should buy that one even if you're not planning on putting peanuts in it).

It would appear that it's not only people who like this bizarre concoction either!

Joking aside, I am actually very curious about this peanuts in coke trend. I mean, it's clearly terrible for you as well which is normally a fairly safe indicator that it will taste nice, right?

One thing that I will never be trying, however, is this ungodly concoction.

I can't stand Dr. Pepper at the best of times (I can hear people furiously typing comments already), so putting peanuts in it is not going to help the state of affairs!

Anyway, wish me luck as I head the shops for a bottle of coke and a bag of peanuts. What has my life become?
