Their bond was a lot tighter than most of us ever knew.
But their relationship was far from being one-sided.
And according to Michael's former bodyguard, Matt Fiddes, Michael was "in love" with Diana.
"He told me she was his ideal wife," he added.
Michael's legacy has been dragged through the mud following the HBO documentary, Leaving Neverland, which presents accusations of sexual abuse.
Michael's bodyguard, Matt Fiddes, recently released a documentary to combat Leaving Neverland called Chase the Truth.
Essentially, the theory is that the accusations of sexual abuse against the king of pop are solely motivated by money.
He had a personal message for Michael's daughter, Paris Jackson.
"Like your father, you have shown immense grace and class under fire," he continued.
He then revealed that he and Michael used to be especially close, and that he confided in him that he wanted his daughter to eventually carry on his legacy.
"He wanted you to be like his best friend Princess Diana.”
And despite the brush her father has recently been painted with, she does her best to uphold his legacy.
