The VMAs Red Carpet Included People Actually Getting Arrested

Award shows are never short on drama, and the VMAs are no exception — you can ask Taylor Swift and Kanye West about that if you don't believe me. Not all the drama happens on stage (or back stage for htat matter) though — some of it happened on the red carpet before the show even started.

The VMAs were held in Newark, New Jersey last night.

This is the first time the award show has been hosted in Newark, and people attending the show discovered there were protesters outside of the center.

They weren't protesting the VMAs, though.

As WCBS Radio reports, the protesters were there to bring attention to the water crisis currently occurring in Newark, similar to the one happening in Flint, Michigan. The protests were being lead by the Newark Water Coalition.

Dangerously high levels of lead in the water has affected over 15 thousand homes.

A page associated with the cause said, "The people of Newark deserve clean, safe, drinkable water. On Monday, August 26th the MTV Video Music Awards are coming to Newark, and the Newark Water Coalition and allies will be there to usher the event in with chants for CLEAN WATER FOR NEWARK!"

Some of these protesters were arrested during their display.

There were reportedly chants of "We don't want no MTV, we want our water free," according to Twitter users who were present for the protests.
