Keanu Reeves Gave Us The Relatable Story Behind The 'Sad Keanu' Meme

By now, everybody and their mothers have seen the "sad Keanu" meme.

And while the photo has ironically brought us all a lot of joy and has made for great meme material over the years, we never got an explanation from the man himself, Keanu Reeves, about the story behind the famous paparazzi photo.

Until now, that is!

In this day and age, there is an endless stream of memes on social media.

Some are obvious but need to be said, others are complex, niche, and only comprehendible to those that experienced the rise of meme culture in real-time.

At any rate, one that has gone down in the meme hall of fame is the "sad Keanu" meme.

The photo is of Keanu sitting on a park bench, holding his lunch, and looking down at the ground.

As you can see, no one has ever looked glummer than this.

Naturally, the internet couldn't help but think that the paparazzi simply caught Keanu at a bad time — a very bad time.

While the photo has ironically provided us all with a lot of laughs, we never got an explanation from Keanu on why he looked so sad.

Was he actually sad? If so, why? If not, is that just his resting face?

Thankfully, the mystery is now over. Keanu recently revealed the story behind the famous meme.

During his latest appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the 57-year-old actor explained why he looked so sad.

Turns out, he wasn't sad at all. He was just hungry.

Very relatable, TBH.

"I'm just eating a sandwich, man!" he said to which the host, Stephen Colbert replied, clarifying, "So, you're not actually sad in 'Sad Keanu'?"

He did admit, however, that he was deep in thought and had a lot going on at the time.

"I was thinking," Keanu explained. "I had some stuff going on. I was hungry."

The host pointed out that the photo was so iconic, it was turned into a panel in the first volume of the comic book series, BRZRKR.

Keanu replied, revealing that he didn't know that photo was going to inspire art.

"I didn't know he was going to do that, but that's what he did," he said. "So, I think it's kind of meta. That's life in art."

Stephen then asked Keanu why he thinks he's become so "memeable."

A fair question considering the "sad Keanu" meme wasn't his last appearance in a meme. In fact, he's had a few memorable ones since then.

Keanu genuinely has no idea what quality makes him such an easy meme target. "I have no clue, sir… Really," he said.
