People Online Share The Worst Design Flaws They Encountered In Real Life

It's easy to admire things that have a great design and function. After all, somebody created them to help us get through our daily lives.

On the other hand, when we encounter design flaws, it makes us wonder what the person who made it was thinking. Am I right? So let's take a look at some of the crappiest ideas out there that are helping no one.

1. Local McDonald's

"There's a McDonald's in my town; and in the dining area, the ceiling lights are so big and hang so low that, on some tables, they are actually at head height and below. You literally can't see the person sitting opposite you."

Let's have a nice romantic date there, haha.

2. Uncomfortable Office Setting

"My company's new offices, which feature stools only — meaning I don't get any back support for EIGHT hours of work. They look sleek and modern AF but the lack of regard for employee comfort is just astounding to me."

OMG, I hate stools, period!

3. World's *Worst* House

Unsplash | Ярослав Алексеенко

"On the Worlds Best Houses Show, there was a house where the rooms didn't connect to each other. As in you had to walk outside and then reenter the house from the outside every time you wanted to change rooms. And this house was in the Arizona desert, great thinking for when summer rolls around."

Can you imagine that?

4. Touch Screen Kitchen

Unsplash | Sidekix Media

"There was an 'AskReddit' thread not too long ago that discussed touch screen interfaces in kitchen appliances, especially since touch screens work super well with wet or damp hands and fingers."

Haha, I love the sarcasm here.

5. Car Battery Placement

"Where they place batteries in cars now. On my Ford Focus, they have it half under the edge of the engine compartment, to the point they ran a ground out because you can't reach the stump to jump it.

"And if you have to change the battery you need a socket with an extension to get the bolt off. Why do that? Why not just put it out in the open like they used to, so I can get to it."

6. Car Horn Placement

Unsplash | Julian Hochgesang

"My mother got a new car recently, and its horn isn't in the center of the steering wheel where it usually is in most cars. Instead, it's a button behind the wheel next to the indicator switches.

"I really can't think of any reason something so vital would be moved away from where it is generally understood that it should be, other than the designing team decided they wanted to introduce their own design."

7. Fake Pockets

"Not just small pockets on women’s clothing, but fake pockets. It gets worse. Sometimes there’ll be a fake zipper on a fake pocket."

Oh, I totally heard this person here. I absolutely can't stand that either. It's so annoying. Isn't it?

8. Flooding Roof

Unsplash | Julián Gentilezza

"Neighbor built a new house where both the front and back roofs slope down towards each other in the middle of the house, forming a big valley. Predictably, his house floods when it rains."

Wow, smart thinking, huh? Nah!

9. Curved TVs

"God help me if I sit at an angle to the screen."

Haha, I can't even imagine that. Whoever came up with this idea must've been drinking something. Why does TV technology seem to get dumber and dumber, huh?

10. Toilet Paper Dilemma

Unsplash | Jasmin Sessler

"I was staying at a hotel in Cleveland where the toilet paper holder was across the room from the toilet. You had to waddle your way over there to get some paper. The first time I used it I sighed so loud."

That doesn't sound right, huh?

11. Touchscreens In Cars

"Touchscreen radio and climate controls in cars. I'm a mechanic and work on new cars and trade-ins. Some of them are such a pain.

"If you have to take your eyes off the road and fiddle with a touchscreen menu to turn the heater or ac on or change a radio station, that's a lousy design."

Amen to that!

12. Apps In General

Unsplash | Rami Al-zayat

"Why does everything need an app?"

I totally second that. It seems that everything you buy these days forces you to download an app to your phone. This, of course, dumbs down your phone, making it run a lot slower over time. Ugh.

13. Another House Design

Unsplash | Serhat Beyazkaya

"Just watched the first episode of that World's Most Extraordinary Houses show on Netflix. They have this house with basically like giant's causeway stairs that go up to the main door. They are all uneven. And some have big gap between them.

"And the couple that built it want to retire to this house. Come on. My grandpa fell down regular [expletive] stairs all the time. Just. Come on."

LOL!

14. Poor Hospital Design

Unsplash | Martha Dominguez de Gouveia

"The hospital I used to work at. Over a billion dollars spent into building it and absolutely no input from actual health care providers. Looks like shipping containers stacked haphazardly on top of each other, long hallways, terrible visibility on your patients' rooms and monitors.

"They made every single unit look exactly the same--couldn't tell if you were in the ICU or the wards."

Ugh, I hate hospitals.

15. School's Lunch Area

Unsplash | Annie Spratt

"In our school lunch area, there are no tables only benches. This means you have to put your lunchbox on your lap and eat out of it. Extremely inconvenient, and the only reason the school gives why it is this way is because the architect thought it looked better this way."

Wow! How sad!

16. Low-Flow Kitchen Sink

Unsplash | Chastity Cortijo

"My kitchen sink is a low flow kitchen sink and yet the purpose of a sink is to deliver water to you. It's not a shower where conservation of water over time is a desired trait. It's a [expletive] sink where you want to get all the water you need as quickly as possible."

Oh, no. This person seems upset!

17. "Smart" Pregnancy Test

Unsplash | Roman Wimmers

"There's a brand of pregnancy test that will send the results to your phone. You have to search for the app, download it, pee on the test, and wait for the results.

"What was wrong with the regular tests? By the time you've downloaded the app, you could have had your results."

I would have no patience for that.

18. Parking Lot Landscaping

Unsplash | Matt Alaniz

"Nearly every parking lot in Florida seems to have landscaping that you can't see around in order to drive carefully."

Oh my goodness. That doesn't sound right to me, huh? Why would they do that? It makes no sense at all.

Okay, have these terrible ideas infuriated you enough?

They have me railed up too. I mean, I just don't get it. If you're not going to make something better, then leave it alone. Am I right? I don't know how the designers of these poorly conceptualized ideas couldn't figure it out.
