Husband Feels Conflicted For Clapping Back After Wife's Brutal Insult To His Mom

There are a lot of things that can make a marriage seem like a gamble, but one aspect that seems to come up a lot concerns how folks will get along with the family they're marrying into.

Sometimes a spouse will know about problem relatives and warn their partner ahead of time, but others will be just as blindsided when the arguments and power struggles start up.

However, sometimes it isn't the family that turns out to be the problem. And that possibility has one Reddit community agreeing with one husband's actions even though they don't sound flattering out of context.

Although the man we're about to hear from asked if he was wrong for insulting his wife in front of his family, we actually need to learn a bit about his mom to understand the situation.

As he explained in a Reddit post, she dropped out of school at 14 after both of her parents died so she could work to afford her siblings' schooling.

Because the Indian government didn't have any benefits for orphaned children at the time, either she had to do this or one of her siblings did so she ended up making the sacrifice.

Fortunately, both siblings would end up getting good jobs and were able to return the favor until she got married.

However, that didn't turn out to be the end of his mother's hard times.

The man's father passed away while his mom was pregnant with him, so she found herself having to work two jobs to support the both of them despite her siblings' help.

It is with this context in mind that we fast forward to a family gathering the man, his wife, and his kids attended on November 3.

The kids were excited to be there, but the wife said they had to leave early so they could make it to basketball practice, swimming lessons, and sessions with a private tutor the next day.

When the mom asked if the kids could maybe skip a day of lessons because they'd been missing their cousins all year, the wife's response was surprisingly harsh.

As the man put it, "My wife retaliated saying an illiterate woman wouldn't know the importance of education and extracurricular activities."

In his words, "My mom was clearly hurt and apologized for overstepping."

And since he couldn't let that pass without comment, he said that literacy clearly hadn't taught his wife basic manners.

As he said, "My wife got mad at me for insulting her in front of everyone and went back home with the kids."

Since she's now ignoring his calls and texts, he's left wondering if he messed up.

But as far as Reddit was concerned, the wife got exactly what she should have expected for such unprovoked rudeness towards his mom.

As one user said, "She flat out insulted your mom, and she's mad at you for calling her out? She's the one who embarrassed herself, you were just defending your mom."

And while another person argued that the degree of blame the wife has in this situation depends on how much she knows, they also believed her remark was inexcusable no matter what.

In their words, "If she's aware of why your mom had to drop out of school (since she knew enough to make comments on it) then she's much worse than if she doesn't know. Either way, her comment was cruel and uncalled for."
