Man Wonders If He Messed Up After Vegan Rejects His Serious Effort To Cook For Her

In some corners of the internet, all you need to do to start an argument is simply say the word "vegan."

Whether it's due to the actions of a vocal minority or the defensiveness of those who aren't as confident in their dietary choices as they let on, you're likely to see at least someone else make some bizarre appeal to nature or drop in an instigating remark whenever someone publicly makes it clear they're vegan.

This can make some vegans overly self-conscious about how they come off, but it can also make the idea of vegan cooking seem a lot harder and more mysterious than it actually is.

Granted, those who eat this way had much fewer options in decades past, but enough alternatives to animal by-products are now readily available to the point that everybody can find some meals they're happy with, right?

Well, one man strongly suspects that this isn't true about his brother's fianceƩ, but he's also now wondering if the way this subject came up made him seem like a jerk.

When one man's parents were about to invite his brother and his fianceé over, he offered to cook for everyone.

As he explained in a Reddit post, this is because he had already had some experience cooking vegetarian and vegan meals because he often considers himself too lazy to prepare meat.

So he eventually whipped up a Dijon vinaigrette salad, a pasta dish made with roasted asparagus and cherry tomatoes, and bread that he had carefully vetted to make sure it didn't contain milk or eggs.

As he put it, "She could eat every single thing served."

But as he soon learned, this didn't stop her from having a lot of questions about what he had prepared.

At first, he figured this inquisitiveness came from situations where meals seemed more vegan-friendly than they actually were. However, it seemed his meal wasn't good enough for her for other reasons.

Apparently, this had to do with his use of olive oil and the fact that neither the pasta nor the bread was whole wheat.

So in his words, "Anddddd now she won't eat, just sat there and tore one of the rolls up into tiny pieces until the table was cleared."

This led the brother to angrily text the man about the fact that his fianceƩ went home hungry, to which the man responded by saying that he thought he just had to accommodate veganism and not an eating disorder.

His brother wasn't pleased with this comment either and the man now regrets making it, but he asked if there was something he should've known about his meal as well.

But Reddit didn't sweat his remark too much (partially because some of them suspected the same thing as him) and commended the effort he put into the meal.

As one user said, "God, does she act that entitled everywhere she goes? You cooked a vegan meal, how were you to know the specifics of what she eats outside of veganism (because she's clearly just being picky)."

Others were less than impressed with the brother for putting the fact that she didn't want to try anything on the man, despite his efforts to accommodate her.

As another person put it, "Saying his partner had to go hungry is just utterly ridiculous. It's laughable. You made her a nice meal. She could have eaten it."
