Mom Teaches Her 7-Year-Old Financial Responsibility By Charging Him Rent

Parents will go to great lengths to teach their child the value of a dollar.

Like this dad was so proud of his son working long hours every day at Burger King. Or this mom who hides her children's snacks in the dishwasher

Now, the internet has become divided over a mom who charges her seven-year-old rent...

The controversial parenting hack was shared by @craftedandcozy on TikTok.

The mom from Florida said she's been "extremely successful" in her method, which involves giving her seven-year-old a daily task list.

He must complete everything on the list in order to earn a dollar per day.

"At the end of the month, he realizes that he has bills to pay."

A seven-year-old with bills?! Yep. He pays those bills to his mom landlord, which includes rent, electricity for his room, and internet for his iPad. She says this teaches him a valuable lesson.

She gives him two buckets: one for fun money, and one for bill money.

It's up to his responsibility to categorize his money into the two buckets before the end of the month.

If you're wondering about what happens to the money, she says it doesn't actually go to bills.

"I don't do anything with his money, but put it right back into his savings account."

The results so far have been priceless: "It has taught him the value of a dollar and responsibility. I'm so pleased with the results, hopefully, it's something that can help you out as well."

But so far, people have been wary about this method.

The viral video, which has been viewed more than 2.7 million times, has many saying that seven is too young for bills.

"Why not just let him be a kid and do this when he's a teenager or something," one wrote.

"Kids should be kids," agreed another. "They can worry about bills when they're older."

People also wondered what happens if he doesn't pay his bills. "Eviction?" one jokingly wrote.

Some users recommended late fees if he can't meet his electric bill one month. This prompted a facepalm from some users.

The mom's parenting hack was also celebrated in the comments.

"I get it. it teaches them the value of money and hard work. You also put it in a savings so he gets it in the end. Instead of blowing it on Candy etc," one user commented.

In a follow-up video, the Florida mom went more into depth on her system.

She shared the whiteboard that holds her son's task list for the day. This included making the bed, brushing teeth, cleaning the bathroom, and putting dirty laundry away,

If he's challenged by chores around the house, she adds it to the chore list.

For instance, if he gets out of the shower and leaves his towel on the ground, he'll be responsible for hanging it up next week.

She then shared his monthly bills. Rent is $5, while electricity and internet are $2 each. That comes out to a total of $9 a month of bills.

Um, can we live this life?!

This means that bills are only 30 percent of his minimum income since he earns $30 a month.

He spends the rest on whatever he wants, which she says largely includes ROBLOX. The mom also pondered what she'll do if he doesn't pay his bills one month.

"I'll give him an extension until the next month," she said. "And then have that conversation at that time."

People were satisfied with the mom's answers. "I love this. He's still masking $21 a month for allowance (and learning the value of money/responsibility... that's pretty good for 7 years old!"
