In case you were wondering, Darren is the real deal.

The 58-year-old’s main role during his 15-year tenure at Buckingham Palace was as Queen Elizabeth II’s personal chef, where he accompanied her on two royal tours of Australia.

In a series of YouTube Q&A videos, Darren says that during his time as her personal chef (between 1982 and 1993) the Queen would eat 4 meals a day: breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner.

Royal biographer, Katie Nicholl, has previously reported that the Queen "typically starts with a simple cup of tea and biscuits, followed by a bowl of cereal."

Lunch would often be grilled fish with wilted spinach or courgettes, says Darren, or a grilled chicken with salad, which is is also a fan of.

Then, in the late afternoon, Darren says the Queen will have her afternoon tea, which always consists of scones with jam and clotted cream.

"She’d always have afternoon tea wherever she was in the world," recalled Darren. "We’d flown out to Australia and were on the Royal Yacht. It was five o’clock in the morning but for the Queen it was five in the afternoon so my first job was making scones."

The former royal chef explained that the Queen never directly said she didn’t like a meal — she would simply leave a message for the staff letting them know she wasn't a huge fan.

"She had a little book on her desk and she would just put a note in there saying 'I don't want this again' or something like that," he recalled.

As far as the Queen's "guilty pleasures" go, Darren recalls it was a Croque Monsieur sandwich with melted Gruyère, ham and whipped eggs.

Of course, we all know by now the Queen cannot stand onion and garlic, so I was worried her food choices would be bland, but as it turns out — they sound fabulous!
