It Doesn't Matter If Age Gap Relationships Creep You Out, Let People Be Happy

Before I get this article started, I want to make it clear that I am in no way condoning, excusing, or supporting relationships between adults and minors. This article is discussing consenting, legal adults only.

When it comes to age gap relationships, everyoone and their brother has an opinion about how many years is too many years between a pair. Well, I'm here to tell you all enough is enough! It's time to just let people live.

Last week, actor Eric Stonestreet made headlines after announcing his engagement to long-time girlfriend, Lindsay Schweitzer.

Despite the pair only being 7 years apart, everyone felt the need to attack Eric, 49, about the precieved age difference between he and Lindsay, 42.

This backlash got me thinking about how silly it was that people were mad that Eric was seemingly "too old" to be with the love of his life.

Because let's be real, Hollywood is certainly not lacking in age-gap couples.

To prove my point, just listen to this list:

There's Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones (25 years), George Clooney and Amal Clooney (17 years), Jay-Z and Beyoncé (12 years), Jason Statham and Rosie-Huntington-Whiteley (20 years), Heidi Klum and Tom Kaulitz (16 years), Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor (31 years), Priyanka Chopra & Nick Jonas (11 years), Hugh Jackman and Deborra Lee-Furness (13 years) and of course, David Foster and Katharine McPhee (34 years).

Although these couples were born in different decades, they share a lot in common — careers, passions, family, friends — and isn't that what matters?

If we ourselves are not in an age gap relationship, I think it's safe to say we all know someone who is!

My parents are seven years apart and my grandparents were ten years apart. My best friend is married to someone 9 years younger than *her*.

If people got too hung up on the age of their partner, they might miss out on a life of love and laughter with their soulmate.

While speaking about her 11-year age gap with hubby Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra noted that being older doesn't bother her.

"It doesn’t bother me. I think media gives trolls a lot more importance than we do. I don’t think we as celebrities or public figures discuss trolling as much as you guys do," she said previously.

She continued:

"I don’t want to change my life based on the opinion of 150 people and it doesn’t affect me. I call it as lazy journalism because you are giving importance to people’s opinions, instead of newsworthy news in the country."

George Clooney took a more comedic approach when he shared his thoughts about the 17-year age gap with his wife, Amal.

When the actor first met the lawyer, he [recalled] "I liked her, but I didn't want to jump the shark on her... I'm 17 years older than her so she might have thought I was a grandpa."

It's unrealistic to think your soulmate will be someone who was born in the same year as you. After all life isn't like primary school — you aren't surrounded by people your own age all day!

As long as two people are happy and in love, who are we to judge? Who are we to deny people happiness just because we feel weird about it? Old souls exist, you know!

Two people can be from different decades but still agree on important issues like family, finances, and morals.

At the end of the day what matters, and what will always matter, is love.

It sounds cheesy, but it's true!

There are enough terrible things happening in the world every single day, so what we don't need to do is worry about why a 26-year-old is marrying a 40-year-old... maybe they're just in love. Ever considered that?!
